A one-night stand is a sexual encounter between two or more people that occurs without an expectation of further intimate relations being shared in the future. The term originally referred to one-night-only performances ("stands") by entertainers at live venues.
Such encounters may occur as casual sex with little or no emotional attachment. They may also occur as a moment of passion, desperation, or farewell between forbidden or ill-fated lovers who will never have another chance to be intimate with each other.
The trope is especially common in works of fiction dealing with infidelity.
