Chef Hatchet/Chris McLean, known mostly as Chref, is a common pairing within Total Drama fandom. The ship is between Chef Hatchet and Chris McLean, both very prominent characters. Chris is the show's host while Chef co-hosts, and they're the only two characters to appear in every season, (save for the spinoff The Ridonculous Race.) They've been shipped together in some capacity since 2007 and is one of the few pairings possible with both characters where both parties are of age.
Common Tropes
- Jealousy: This is played up in canon with Chef being jealous of only "co-hosting" the show instead of being its main host. In fanworks, Chris may be jealous that Chef is dating other people/ignoring him.
- Established Relationship: Common in fic since they've been working together for many years. Some fans say, as kids, they thought they were married while watching the show.
- Background Pairing: Common in fic that focuses on slash relationships between the contestants. Slippery Slopes, the most kudos'd Total Drama work on Archive of Our Own, features Chef/Chris as a background pairing.
- Spooning: Chef spoons Chris very easily with their difference in physique. Very much Big Guy, Little Guy.
- Topher: Topher from Total Drama: Pahkitew Island may tag along with them, like Chef and Chris are his uncles.

March 17th is Chref Day on chefhatchet's Appreciation Calendar. Chef/Chris was also a runner up in TD Ship Tumblr 2014, losing to Alejandro/Heather.
Pairing Names for Chef/Chris
The portmaneau "Chref" was coined as a pairing name for them in 2009 with the creation of the ChrefClub on DeviantArt by homestar-n00b. A few months after the club was founded, the name became recognized in a thread on The Writers' Lounge: TDI Edition[4], along that it's likely pronounced "Kref." As of 2024, Chref is synonymous with them.
Signed NSFW Chref Fanart
In ~2016, a fan of the show who wasn't involved in the fandom named truedadledingo shared on Tumblr that they got fanart of Chef/Chris erotica signed by Chris' VA at the time, Christian Potenza.[5] The post was lost in the Tumblr NSFW Content Purge of 2018, but what is known was that Potenza not only signed the photo, but also wrote, "Chris tops!"

"Here is my newest chref gore art where they're eating each other's limbs"
This was said by an infamous harasser in the fandom named cherriquitecontrary in 2014 as a way to harass chref (fan) during an argument. At the time, chref (fan) did actually draw "a lot" of Chef/Chris gore art "as a highschooler with mental problems."[6] The phrase is sometimes memed in the fandom and otherwise parroted around. It was also later featured in unironicduncanstan's Total Drama Iceberg in 2021.
