History

Controversy

Some fans have come to distrust some of them, especially of the mods don't post a donation receipt.

Example of a zine mod discussing the distrust in fandom when providing documentation of donation:

If you’re wondering why I’m posting it now, I’ve been following the Voltron Zine Scene for some time now and one thing I’ve noticed is an increasing distrust of charity zines and whether or not the money has been donated. Though nothing has changed with us, we just wanted to pop back in and provide documentation of our donation[1]

Advise from a zine how-to guide:

If money is involved you MUST be transparent. This will not only protect you and your contributors in the long run, but gain trust. This means records of all receipts, record of orders, record of donations, EVERYTHING (with your personal information blacked out). Show a record for any reimbursement of materials if you choose to take that reimbursement. Not sharing the bare bones of your financial records can open you up to questions and criticisms and grow distrust-which would then hurt future endeavors.[2]

Discussion:

Omg amazing. I feel like zines are second only to cons in terms of the trainwreck factor of watching people with no skills for organizing a large event trying to do so anyway. Even better when it's a "charity zine" and it turns out the secret "charity" in mind the whole time was the mods' pockets, lol.[3]
