Cabin fic is a trope in Panic! at the Disco fanfic. It refers to stories set during the time in early 2007 when Ryan Ross, Brendon Urie, Spencer Smith and Jon Walker locked themselves up in a massive Nevada cabin[1][2] with a bunch of instruments (and a lot of weed) to write a (doomed) album, the legendary "wolf musical."
Stories and images filmed at the cabin by Shane Valdes appear on the deluxe edition DVD for Pretty. Odd. (PATD's second album, released in 2008). The cabin itself is referenced in a Pretty. Odd. song title: "From a mountain in the middle of the cabins." Some of the material created in the cabin was used in the 2011 album Vices and Virtues, after Ryan and Jon had left the band.
This trope is unrelated to other fandoms' stories also set in cabins, such as due South's Canadian Shack trope.
History
After Jon Walker's addition to the band in May 2006, Panic! at the Disco decided to take a break from non-stop touring to come up with ideas for their next album, which would be their second after A fever You Can't Sweat Out. In 2007 they proceeded to retire to a large cabin in the mountains of Nevada for several months,[3] from march to May 2007.[4] The band was isolated without outside contact. This, combined with the drugs they were doing, reportedly led to them going a little crazy and being unproductive. This culminated in Ryan Ross at one point smashing his guitar.
They began creating a (doomed) album which would have been called Cricket & Clover'. It was to be a concept album that told a love story, and would be like a musical soundtrack, with each song leading into the next. This is reportedly due to Ryan being into musicals at the time. Although the band came up with roughly three-quarters of the album, they proceeded to scrap the entire thing and determined that the cabin retreat had been a failure. Not many details are known about the album. The plot is said to have involved wolves.[citation needed] There is a picture of lyrics written by Ryan. Bits of the song "It's True Love" can be found online.[5] A demo called Paul Revere Jumpsuit Apparatus was released on a Fall Out Boy Mix-tape - this would later be released as Nearly Witches (Ever Since We Met...).
Post-Cabin, the band created Pretty. Odd., which was released as the band's second album in March 2008. The only song from the cabin album that has been released is Nearly Witches (Ever Since We Met...), which was reworked, with many lyrics changed, for Vices & Virtues, the album released after Ryan and Jon left P!atD. The song has notably strange lyrics and musical composition. Post-Divorce, Brendon has appeared to mock the song by sometimes singing the line, "Here I am, composing a burlesque," in exaggerated voices.[6][7] This is often interpreted as him mocking Ryan in particular, because it is know that this was a lyric Ryan wrote that was unchanged.[8]
Fans have continued to question Brendon Urie about Cricket & Clover, but he maintains that the songs were scrapped because they weren't good and they will not be released. According to Jon Walker the music sounded "weird and dense and beautiful." [9] He said, "the lyrics weren't [written] as a band. We were writing the lyrics, putting them to a piano and trying to figure out what to do from there."
In Fanon
Fans started writing fic set in the cabin as soon as it was announced they were in it.[10]
The Cabin became a place for fan writers to project all sorts of fantasies, supported by canon stories of breakdowns (such as Ryan Ross attempting to burn his electric guitar "alive" because the era of the electric guitar was over. Apparently.)
The Cabin thus provided a perfect, secluded, closed-circuit pressure-cooker of a setting for characters to experiment with all kinds of things and experience extreme emotions.
At the end of 2006, they start working on a new album, and they decide to go up to a cabin in the mountains to work on it. Fandom has nicknamed this "The Porno Cabin".[11]
Even when fic is not set in the Cabin, it is often referenced in fic, for example:
“I totally had a beard, dude, remember at the—” He cuts himself off before saying porno-cabin - even though Ryan’s the only one who usually gets pissy about that, because Ryan thinks it cheapens the experience, even though all they did there was smoke pot and watch lots and lots of porn, seriously – and then he spots Spencer’s smirk. “Oh, funny, asshole.”[12]
