Avery is a rival to the player character, (either Gloria or Victor,) in Pokémon Shield's Isle of Armor DLC. In Pokémon Sword, his role is replaced by Klara. In the DLC's sequel, The Crown Tundra, he becomes a Pokémon Gym Leader.
