Anastasia is a musical fantasy animated Fox Animation Studios film based off a 1956 film with the same name.
The film is based on the urban legend claiming that the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia survived the execution of her family.
Bartok the Magnificent is a 1999 spin-off film that focused on Bartok, Rasputin's bat sidekick.
The film was adapted into a stage musical which opened on Broadway in 2017.
Canon
A dangerous and power-mad sorcerer, Rasputin, sells his soul in exchange to place a curse on the Romanov family, sparking the Russian Revolution. Anastasia, daughter of the Tsar Nicholas II, is lost during the siege of the palace.
10 years later, an eighteen-year-old orphan named Anya who, in hopes of finding some trace of her family, sides with a pair of con men, Dimitri and Vladimir, who wish to take advantage of her likeness to the Grand Duchess in order to get paid 10 million rubles. Rasputin, who had been stuck in limbo since On the way to Paris, Anya and Dimitri fall in love.
In a meeting to get with the Grand Duchess, Dimitri realizes that Anya is actually Anastasia, and he would have no chance at being with Anya because of it. Although the Grand Duchess, Marie, initially refuses to see Anya, Dimitri fights for her and convinces Marie to see Anya. Anya and Marie realize the truth as well, that Anya is actually Anastasia.
Refusing the reward for finding Anastasia, Dimitri leaves. At Anastasia's return celebration, Marie informs her of Dimitri's gesture. Anastasia then wanders through a garden where she is trapped and attacked by Rasputin. Dimitri returns to save her, but is injured and knocked unconscious. Anastasia manages to kill Rasputin to avenge her family.
Dimitri and Anastasia reconcile, and they decide to leave together.

The Anastasia film fandom is a small fandom, and has been eligible to be a Yuletide fandom since 2006.[1] The fandom is mainly situated on FanFiction.Net and DeviantART. Youtube also has a lot of music videos and tribute videos, mainly focused on the main characters Anastasia/Anya and Dimitri who are often in crossover vids. Tumblr has several blogs focused around the film, often with picspams and gifs of various scenes in the film. The fandom is slowly migrating to the Archive of Our Own.[2]
The fandom's OTP is Anastasia/Dimitri.
Anastasia is often mistaken as a Disney film or Disney Princess.[3]
Anastasia and Dimitri often appear in Non/Disney crossovers, often paired with Disney characters.
