Adagio is a 2004 Harry Potter story by Xochiquetzl. It is a Snape/Lupin romance set during and shortly after the events of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Author's summary: "Love, hate, and slow change."
Background
Xochiquetzl started writing the story right after Order of the Phoenix came out,[1] as she "felt the need to rewrite big chunks from Snape's POV"[2] and was spurred to join Snape fandom because she "was so outraged by how unfair Harry was to Snape at the end."[3]
In 2020, Xochiquetzl said of writing the story: "I was trying really hard not to join the HP fandom, and then OOtP came out, and... I went HERE. To Adagio-land. It was the longest thing I'd written to date, and I really enjoyed 'living' there."[4] On Archive of Our Own, she tagged the story "One of My Favorites" and "If you only read one work by me".
Fanart
Ildi created fanart for the story in September 2005: Adagio (not worksafe)
Warnings: full frontal nudity(The writing in the background is a short excerpt from The Acts of John)

Illusztráció Xochiquetzl írásához, az Adagio-hoz (angol nyelvű, 18 éven felülieknek!). A jelenetben Severus épp egy erőteljes védőmágia rúnáit írja Remus-ra thestral vérrel, és a helyzet erotikája természetesen nem hagyja egészen hidegen őket. Xochi a ficben kelta v. viking rúnákra emlékeztető írást említ, de mivel azt nem ismerem, ezért székely rovásírást használtam, aminek a jelei sokban hasonlítanak az északi rúnaíráshoz: a vers a háttérben és Remus bőrén egy apokrif töredék János Cselekedetei-ből, Weores Sándor fordításában (A teljesség felé). Adagio (Csak 18 év felettieknek - figyelmeztetés: "pucér pasi merevedéssel". Rendelésre készült kép, kérlek ne használd fel máshol!)[6]Illustration for Xochiquetzl's writing, Adagio (in English, for ages 18+!). In the scene, Severus is writing a powerful protective spell on Remus with thestral blood, and the eroticism of the situation naturally doesn't leave them completely indifferent. Xochi mentions a writing reminiscent of Celtic or Viking runes in the fic, but since I don't know it, I used Székely runic writing, the signs of which are very similar to Nordic runic writing: the poem in the background and on Remus' skin are an apocryphal fragment from the Acts of John, translated by Sándor Weores (Towards completeness). Adagio (Only for ages 18+ - warning: "naked guy with an erection". Custom-made image, please do not use it anywhere else!)
Recs and Reviews
I have a weakness for stories in which Snape ends up consoling Lupin after the death of Sirius. The premise allows for a long, plotty exploration of both men’s characters, and the comfort sex can be very hot. One of my favorites in this genre is xochiquetzl’s novella, Adagio.“Adagio” is unusual among my favorite Snape stories, because the author persuasively pulls off something that I would have sworn was almost impossible before I read this story: she creates an IC Snape who is capable of affection, consideration, and who has decent relationship skills (without having to be taught this by his partner). She does this by giving (deftly, and briefly) a back story about Snape’s mother, which made me realize what an underexploited resource she is in fanfiction. Snape’s interactions with his mother show us why he is later able to respond to Lupin’s overtures of friendship, and why he is able to intelligently pursue and comfort Lupin in the summer after Harry’s fifth year. The story gives us a wonderful slow build, weaving its scenes in and out of OoTP canon, and xochiquetzl is very good at making her sex scenes "speak" about the larger relationship between the partners involved. Another strength of this story is its minor characters. Often, the smaller characters are sock puppets, serving only to advance the plot. Here, they’re fully realized in their own rights, and are often fleshed out in only a few words.
What I liked most about this story, however, was its realistic understanding of how older adults interact. Much of the relationship between Snape and Lupin here is subtextual: unvoiced, implied, and well-understood by both men; what develops between them is very believable. “Adagio” will please any reader who is looking for an intelligent exploration of a strong and erotic connection between the two men. I know this sounds simplistic: but reading it made me feel very good.— cordelia_v for crack_broom, 10 August 2005 [7]
