Zacharias Smith is a minor character in the Harry Potter series. He is often described as "tall," "blond," and "skinny," "with an upturned nose." He has a bad reputation among Harry and his friends.
His year is unknown; he was either in Harry's year, or at the most a year younger.
Canon
Though Zacharias is not even close to being one of the main characters, he has a few notable moments that make him memorable:
- He pestered Ginny Weasley for what happened at the Department of Mysteries in 1996, resulting in getting hit with the Bat-Bogey Hex from her.
- He commentated a Gryffindor-Slytherin Quidditch match, during which he continuously insulted Harry and the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
- He "barreled over first years" in an effort to escape from the last Battle of Hogwarts.
Zacharias was on the Hufflepuff Quidditch team since at least 1995, and may have known Cedric Diggory, having been his housemate and asking about the details of Cedric's death afterwards.
He was also a member of Dumbledore's Army, which was how he was introduced in the series. He mentioned Ernie Macmillan being friendly enough with him to let him know when D.A. meetings were.
Fandom
Zacharias has not received much attention from the Harry Potter fandom at large. The most popular pairing involving him on AO3 is Harry Potter/Zacharias Smith.[1] He has also been paired with Draco Malfoy and Luna Lovegood, as well as some other minor characters such as Hannah Abbot, Blaise Zabini, and Astoria Greengrass.
