Yeonjun Safe Zone is a spam comment frequently found on various YouTube videos, particularly those deemed "cringe" by viewers. The comments typically instruct the reader to like the comment in order to enter the supposed "safe zone" from the video's content.
The phrase originates from Yeonjun, a member of the K-pop boy group TXT. However, the spam comments are not associated with Yeonjun himself or TXT's fandom. Rather, they began appearing on videos that used TXT's music, possibly as a misguided attempt to hate on the group by spamming Yeonjun's name.
Spread
The Yeonjun safe zone comments quickly spread beyond K-pop related videos and now appear on a wide range of YouTube content.
They often follow a formulaic format:
YEONJUN SAFE ZONE (number of likes/seats left) 👇
The comments may also include lists of "food" and "drinks" represented by emojis as an additional tactic to gain likes.
Additionally, the name "Yeonjun" is often misspelled in these spam comments, with variations such as "Younjun" or "Yeonjin" being common.
It was first added to Urban Dictionary in 2023.[1]
Reception
Many fans find the Yeonjun safe zone comments extremely annoying and disruptive, as they are irrelevant to the actual video content. The comments are widely seen as lazy attempts to farm likes.
Many creators, particularly on TikTok, regularly delete these spam comments from their videos. Despite this, the ubiquity of the comments has turned "Yeonjun Safe Zone" into a widely recognized meme, with people jokingly using the phrase to refer to "protection" from any type of cringey or unpleasant content.
This meme can be seen as a type of "containment breach", where a meme or piece of content escapes its original fandom context and reaches a wider, often confused audience. Many of the users leaving these comments likely have no knowledge of who Yeonjun actually is.
