Weekly Shounen Jump (週刊少年ジャンプ shuukan shounen janpu), often known simply as Shounen Jump in English-speaking fandom, is the most popular and widely-read manga magazine in Japan. Running since 1968 and boasting a readership in the millions, SJ publishes shounen comics ostensibly aimed at early to late teen boys; but people of all ages enjoy the magazine's various titles, and Jump has an extensive fangirl following both in Japan and worldwide. Manga titles serialized in Shounen Jump (generally at one 12~20 page chapter per week) are periodically collected into compilation volumes known as tankoubon, and anime adaptations of the magazine's most popular titles are commonplace.
In addition to the original Japanese publication, translated versions of the Shounen Jump magazine are published in the United States, locations in Europe, and elsewhere. The contents of these magazines usually differ significantly from Shounen Jump in Japan, most often consisting of series from SJ's back catalog of famous manga titles.
Criticism of Management
In November 2017, mangaka Nobuhiro Watsuki was charged by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police with possession of child pornography. His serialization of the Rurouni Kenshin sequel went on hiatus, and returned in June 2019 after Watsuki was charged a penalty of ¥200,000 (just over $1,800). Shounen Jump's management has faced criticism for their response to this and other sex crimes committed by mangaka in their employ. English-speaking fandom's reaction to Watsuki's continuing career has been mixed, with some strongly negative responses and others stating that the mangaka's personal life doesn't matter to them.
There has also been criticism of the support shown to Watsuki by other mangaka in the industry. In January of 2021, an exhibit premiered in Japan celebrating Watsuki's life and career. A number of other mangaka sent supportive comments that were displayed prominently in the exhibit. Reactions on Twitter were largely negative.
