Author's Comments
My favourite of the stories I've written, actually, because I think it grasps both the mature relationship between them and the problems with it. It also contains one of my personal quirks, the stream of consciousness passage. [1]
This story contains m/m sex, the explicit variety. If that bugs you, well, you'll probably end up shelling out a lot of money to a psychiatrist someday, but that's not really my business. In the meantime, go read something else. If, on the other hand, if you happen to be under the magical age of 18/21, please wait to read this until you become legal. Not only will that keep me out of trouble, but it'll give you something to look forward to. <g>This takes place sometime prior to TWOK, but not too much prior, 'cause the boys herein aren't as young as they used to be (though they aren't as old as they're going to be). About all you need to know is that they're past the five-year mission, but that's not keeping them off the Enterprise -- except for this story, but this is shore leave.
Title stolen with the utmost respect from Simon & Garfunkle. Damn but I love that song, not that it has a thing to do with this story. [2]

I would say this is a PWP, but that would be a lie, because, though short and having no discernable plot, there is so much more than sex going on here. It’s a place I think many couples get to who have been together for a long time. The person you fell in love with is still there, but they look different now. Time has changed you both and sometimes there is a need to reconnect to the person that was. This beautiful story shows how Kirk and Spock would deal with such a situation. I can’t recommend it enough. [4]
This is a wonderfully sensual piece of writing which I thoroughly enjoyed, although I found myself wishing it was longer! It takes place during a visit Kirk and Spock pay to Kirk’s old family home in Iowa. Although it does not state specifically when this incident takes place, it is clearly later in their lives after events on Genesis, when they have been bonded for a very long time and are utterly comfortable with each other. In spite of this, Kirk has become conscious of a distance between them, which he is reluctant to attempt to question Spock about. Things come to a head on a very hot night during a thunderstorm when they finally talk about their relationship which culminates in a very hot and sensuous encounter between them while sitting on the porch watching the rain. This is a wonderful mood piece which perfectly captures the tension and spark between them. I particularly enjoyed this author’s characterisation of both Kirk and Spock, and how comfortable they are with each other, they know each other so well, and yet they are both afraid to reach out to each other across the gap which has gradually appeared between them. I also loved the setting of this story, and the way in which this author describes them sitting together on a hot thundery night watching the rain, and earlier, Kirk prowling around his old home in the dark, unable to sleep then finding is Spock awake as well which leads to their finally have a discussion about the issues which have been affecting them, leading to a very hot and erotic conclusion.[5]
I love this short piece which portrays Kirk and Spock on shore leave on Earth somewhere toward the end of an implied second 5-year mission. The story describes Kirk early morning worries that Spock is becoming more distant and the story hints that perhaps this interlude is a precursor to Spock choosing to go to Gol. Spock confesses to Kirk that ―I have never told you this, but there are times when I love you so much that I am sure, in spite of logic, that my heart has stopped.‖ Both Kirk and Spock are not sure how to respond to this announcement of rising emotions. The dark, early morning setting, being awakened by a thunderstorm sets an immersive backdrop while Kirk and Spock struggle to remain together. [6]
Every recommendation page should have something by Jane St Clair on it. Wednesday morning, 3 a.m. is a lovely ST:TOS story, poignant and understated and just, you know, *good*. [7]
