Van Helsing is a horror action 2004 film starring Hugh Jackman as the titular character.

Canon

Van Helsing is a 'Monster Hunter' who is sent on missions by The Knights of the Holy Order - a secret organization made up of experts from various religions, housed beneath the Vatican - to save lost souls if possible, or rid the world of the evil when it isn't. His primary mission in the film is to rescue the gypsy princess - Anna Valerious (portrayed by Kate Beckinsale) - so that her family's souls can go to Heaven. This is necessary because her ancestor made a deal with the devil in order to live forever.

Upon arriving in Transylvania, he and his sidekick/assistant, Carl, discover that there are vampires attacking the town and that Anna's brother, Velkan, is a werewolf.

The titular character was inspired by the vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing from Bram Stoker's Dracula, however this version's character is named Gabriel Van Helsing. Count Dracula, his brides, Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein's monster also appear in the film.

There are two prequel-type additions to the franchise - the animated video Van Helsing: The London Assignment and the one-shot comic book Van Helsing: From Beneath the Rue Morgue. The animated video depicts the 'birth' of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, while the comic book is much like a missing scene between the death of Mr. Hyde and Van Helsing's return to Rome, where Van Helsing battles Doctor Moreau and his hybrid mutants.
