User talk:Gamin Davis
Hi Gamin Davis, it nice to see a new editor taking an interest in Fanlore. However, I've noticed you've deleted large sections of two pages, if you wish to make such drastic changes to an article it would probably be best to start a discussion on the talk page first. Also, Slash versus non-slash was an article about a meta essay, so whether it is current or not isn't really doesn't really matter, because the article is about the essay and the reaction to it at the time it was posted. If you need help you can always reach out to fellow editors or check out the Help pages -- Kingstoken (talk) 01:59, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Gamin Davis, SecurityBreach from the Fanlore Policy & Admin team here. I also noticed your edits on The Loneliness of Command and agree with Kingstoken. If you want to remove large amounts of content, you need to discuss this on the talk page first. You should also state your reasons in the edit summary. I don't think the removal of the quotations was beneficial to the article and the changes you made have already been rolled back by another editor.
- Please remember, deleting large sections of existing pages might be considered hostile editing and could get you banned from editing on Fanlore (see: Fanlore:Hostile Editing Policy). SecurityBreach (talk) 17:11, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
Excuse me--I naively thought that since I was editing *my own zine listing*, I could edit what and however much I wanted. Therefore, it didn't cross my mind that I could possibly be doing something that violated any rules. I DID state my reasons, BTW. The slash/anti-slash discussion I was involved with, and which was included, had nothing to do with a "meta essay", whatever the heck that is; it was about exactly that, views of characters as involved in slash relationships or *not* involved--I was in it and I *know* what it was about. I deleted most of it because I believe, and still believe, it added nothing to the listing but negativity, and it might scare off people from reading the story *or* buying the zine. Oh, and maybe not being current "doesn't matter" to *you*, but since a lot of my views and information has changed, it DOES to me, and it's my listing. I say all it does is bring unneeded negativity to the listing.
I'm about to make another edit on the ANGEL TREK listing, because the negative comments there are not just critical, some of them constitute personal attacks (especially the one at the top) and are certainly not constructive. I don't expect the edits to be as extensive, because there's not as much there, but among the quoted comments are those from someone who used links and references to one of the stories WITHOUT MY PERMISSION and in a derogatory way. I certainly think I would be justified in removing *that* one.
Or, maybe I won't. I just looked at the listing I spent *4 hours* editing yesterday and all the edits are gone, so whoever "rolled back" my edits, thanks a heap. YOU may not have thought the removal "was beneficial to the article", but I did. (Also, part of what you removed was simply *my response* to some of the comments. Was that *really* necessary?) I don't want to look at snarky, vindictive, non-constructive comments every time I go to my zine listings, so YES, I was trying to remove them, for the benefit of the zine listing and of people who might not want to go there (I mean besides me) and be hit by those comments. They are destructive, nasty and add nothing to the zine pages they were attached to.
- Hi again,
- Fanlore offers several help pages for new and experienced editors where you can find advise and get to know the wiki, its mission, and its policies better. Since you asked about meta essays, I'd like to point out our article on meta and the category Meta Essays where you can find several examples.
- Fanlore is a multi-authored website and all fans are invited to join and edit. In other words, this is not 'your own zine listing' but a listing of your zines and all editors may work on it as long as they respect Fanlore's policies. Please remember, these Fanlore pages are not 'your pages', but pages documenting something you did or were involved in. The wiki aims to document fandom and fannish activities which means that controversial opinions are welcomed, too (See: Fanlore:Plural Point of View). I'm sorry you perceive some fannish voices as 'negativity' and fear they might scare off readers or even stop fans from buying the zine, but this page is about the history and fandom reception of your publication. The comments you deleted are a part of this history and therefore deserve their place on Fanlore too. If you feel that a page does not accurately cover a wide range of fannish opinions, we encourage you to add new opinions and quotes that fit the article structure.
- In regard to your recent edits on Heart Treks, I'd like to ask you to refrain from further hostile editing because this will inevitably lead to your Fanlore account being blocked. Please consider this an official warning.
All I did on the Heart Treks page was *respond* to some incredibly nasty and abusive comments. I didn't cut anything out. And if you can't see how negative some of these are, then IMO you haven't actually *read* them. (I would certainly call posting a comment accompanied by the word "*puke*" negative, nasty and non-constructive. There were so many abusive comments on the Heart Treks page that I can't even single out an example.) These are not just regular constructive criticisms, they're nasty, abusive and personal. If you can't see that, I'd sure like to know what you think DOES qualify as negative, because I can't imagine anything more negative than some of these comments. And yes, I know Fanlore technically *owns* the pages, but they're for MY zine, MY artwork, and MY fic, therefore I consider them mine in every sense *but* actual ownership, and I can't believe I have to "get permission" first to edit them. You call it "hostile editing", I call it responding to *hostile commentary*, which I would think you would understand if you'd actually read through all the comments. (Maybe hateful, abusive commentary that can only cause pain is okay with you?) However, if you're going to just automatically delete every edit I make, then really, what's the point of my making them? I take a lot of time with them, trying to make them more polite than the comments I'm responding to, trying to get the wording just right, and you just wipe it out. I guess I'll be seriously limiting my time here from now on, since I don't like looking at these EXTREMELY NEGATIVE AND ABUSIVE comments every time I go to certain pages and you basically won't let me do *anything* about them; I can't even comment on destructive reviews that I never had a chance to before because I was never aware of the source (like the review on the Heart Treks page). I was looking for anything like a rules section yesterday and all I could find was an editing tutorial, which didn't address any of my issues, so I guess I'm going to have to look at some of your posted links. Controversy I don't mind, deliberate ABUSE and DESTRUCTION I do. (And without even looking at the "meta" thing, I know what that discussion was talking about, and it started out talking about one of my stories, then went WAAAY off on a tangent about Harlan Ellison, which was also part of why I deleted large amounts of it, as that had nothing to do with my story or the original topic.) So okay, warning received, and I guess I won't bother trying to edit anything else. I'm really disappointed in this site. I thought wikis were more flexible than this.

- As an additional note from P&A, regarding adding your own commentary: we always welcome more info, and for info such as an author's commentary, this should be cited or linked to from somewhere else. That way, subsequent editors are able to condense and edit and summarize it on Fanlore. So, for example, an author's commentary from their blog could be excerpted, or summarized and linked to on a relevant Fanlore page. -- FBV (talk) 16:55, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
Oh, P.S. I forgot: my comments are original to me in the moment; I can't link them to anything because I don't have a website or a blog, just a Facebook account, and I don't have any reason to post them there as they're a response to comments *here*. (What's P&A?)
