Tracey Sketchit, or Kenji in Japan, is a character in the Pokémon anime. He was Ash and Misty's traveling during the Orange Island saga in the second season but left them after a short time to become Professor Oak's assistant.
Fandom
OrangeShipping, the pairing of Tracey and Misty became a fairly popular ship, as did ApprenticeShipping, pairing Tracey with Professor Oak. Tracey canonically idolized Professor Oak, and the ship increased in popularity when he decided to stay in Pallet Town to be Oak's assistant. ApprenticeShipping is one of the only common cross-generational pairings in the Pokémon fandom.
Brock/Tracey also became somewhat popular, seemingly as a way to combat the infighting between Brock and Tracey fans. He's also commonly shipped with Misty's sister Daisy thanks to some cute interactions between the two in the Pokemon Chronicles series.
Controversy
Many Brock fans hated Tracey for replacing him for an extended period of the anime. More extreme cases included some authors killing and torturing him in their fics for humor, or making him and Brock fight.
Cori Falls also bashed the character heavily, despite not being a Brock fan. Her reasoning seemed to be that Tracey's Scyther gave her favorite characters unwanted haircuts, leading her to warp his character into a lazy, perverted, fat slob who was easily beaten up by Gary Oak.
