The Todoroki SiblingsTodoroki Shouto, Todoroki Natsuo, Todoroki Fuyumi, and Todoroki Touya—are four characters from the manga and anime Boku no Hero Academia.

Canon Background

Their father, Endeavor, married and had children with the explicit goal of raising an heir to surpass All Might. Shouto, the youngest, was isolated from his siblings and raised with a strict training regiment, for which he resents his father. Natsuo and Fuyumi were judged to have insufficiently powerful quirks and ignored. Touya, the eldest, did have a fire quirk, and Endeavor initially raised him to be his heir. However, Touya's quirk hurt him and Endeavor discarded Touya to focus his efforts on Shouto. Touya apparently died in a training accident around age 13, but actually survived and became the villain Dabi.

Fandom

The Todoroki siblings garnered interest within the fandom going back to at least the Sports Festival Arc, when Shouto explained his family history to Midoriya. Fans were especially intrigued by the mysterious Touya, and latched onto the theory that Dabi is a Todoroki. The theory had widespread popularity and was treated as "basically canon" by many fans even before Dabi's backstory was revealed in the manga.

The chapter in which Dabi's past identity as Touya was confirmed came out the week of November 5th, 2020, and was somewhat mixed up with general furor over the US Presidential Election Results and Destiel becoming canon on Tumblr.[1]

While Shouto and Touya (as Dabi) are by far the more popular characters within the fandom (and have much more screentime in canon), Natsuo and Fuyumi are also popular characters, and there are many fanworks exploring the relationships and characterization of all four siblings.

Fanon and tropes

  • Fuyumi as the "mother" of the family: after Rei's mental break and long term admission to a psychiatric ward, many fanworks portray Fuyumi as stepping up to fill a responsible role in the family, particularly looking out for Shouto and Natsuo. She is often portrayed as more accomodating of Endeavor, or willing to put up with his abuse, in order to attempt to have a "normal family".
  • Natsuo as the "clown" or most easy going sibling: Since he had the least contact with Endeavor, he's often portrayed as the most "normal" sibling, with friends and activities outside the family. Some fanworks explore his guilt for feeling like he's the one who suffered the least due to Endeavor's treatment, and many fanworks portray him as the most overtly angry and willing to confront Endeavor about his mistreatment.
  • Shouto as the "baby" of the family: In canon he was the focus of Endeavors attentions from a very young age, and therefor recipient of the most attention but also the harshest treatment (perhaps other than Touya). Many fics extend this dynamic to making his older siblings very protective of him, trying to shield him from Endeavor in AUs where they are allowed to have more contact. On a lighter side, many fics depict him as more bratty, using his status as the baby or Endeavors favorite, or even just his isolation and social awkwardness, to get his way.
  • Touya as a fiercely protective older brother: particularly in AUs where he either doesn't run away or remains in contact with his siblings after his "death". Even in canon-compliant fanworks and other AUs where Dabi maintains distance from his family, it is common to characterize him as acting brotherly and protective towards younger members of the League of Villains, especially Toga Himiko.
  • Touya's self worth issues after being discarded as heir by Endeavor and continuing into his later life.
  • Quirkless!Natsuo: since Natsuo's quirk was left unaddressed in canon, many fans headcanon him as quirkless, or with a water related quirk. Quirkless!Natsuo fits into headcanons of Natuso as the most independent or "normal" of the siblings, with Endeavor exerting less control over his life because he doesn't care about a quirkless child.
  • Twins: especially earlier in the series when less was known about Touya, it was a popular to depict Touya and Fuyumi as twins.
  • Roleswap: particularly Fuyumi as the runaway villain pursuing vengeance against Endeavor.
