Tiana is the protagonist in the Disney film The Princess and the Frog. She was also introduced to the live-action TV series Once Upon a Time in its seventh season.[1]

Canon

Prince Naveen, after being turned into a frog, kisses Tiana, believing she is a princess, but the spell backfires and turns her into a frog as well.

Fandom

As the last traditionally animated Disney Princess, and the first African American one (to date), Tiana upholds a strong legacy among Disney characters.

Shipping

Tiana is most commonly shipped with her husband Naveen, as it is a canon relationship. However, ships with Lottie aren’t uncommon, and crossover ships with just about any other Disney prince or princess exist in the masses. Non-Caucasian characters from different animation studios such as Dreamworks have also been shipped with Tiana, however these are less frequently seen.

Controversy

The Princess and the Frog was the last major Disney film to be traditionally animated, while their subsequent film, Tangled, was the first to be fully CGI. This new style of animation really impacted The Princess and the Frog's success, due to Tangled being the bigger, flashier movie. The fact that Tangled features a Caucasian princess, and Princess and the Frog features an African American working class protagonist turned princess, has sparked plenty of debate and fan frustration over the years.

While not a common occurence, fanart that racebends Tiana has also been the subject of heated debate, with discussions revolving around erasure and what constitutes representation.[2]
