The Twice-Told Tale is a Steve/Tony story by arysteia. It was written for the Avengers Big Bang 2012. Accompanying artwork and cover is by Realproof.[1]
Summary
For someone he'd hero-worshipped for so long, Steve Rogers in the flesh is a pretty big disappointment. For one thing, he keeps looking at Tony as though he reminds him of someone else, and even if he never says anything, Tony's pretty sure it's his father. A life time of not measuring up to Howard's expectations is more than enough, thank you very much, and he's certainly not going to make an effort to live up to any of Steve's. Steve's pretty clearly failed to live up to his expectations, in any case, and that's not hypocritical at all.

Recs and Reviews
Tony and Steve take a long, long time to get their shit together. Even longer than it initially appears. This story was clever and funny and a delight to roll around in. So often stories end on the main characters getting together, and it was really wonderful to see Tony and Steve BEING together, all wrapped up in an extremely smart plot. Must read.[3]
Holy crap, my jaw is dropping from the sheer level of awesomeness in this fic. When I first started reading this, I was thinking, "Oh, this fic is going to be fantastic! It's going to have some brilliant characterization of Steve and Tony, they're going to step on each other's toes a lot at first but eventually, they'll come to love each other and have an epic, epic romance. Awesome!" Needless to say, I am very very glad that I was partially right because this fic is so, so much *more*. I did not even see the second half of the fic coming.[4]
I strongly, strongly recommend this fic. It starts out your kind of standard movieverse fic but it takes a sharp turn into something really fucking awesome. If you’re in the mood for a long, very well written fic then here you go.[5]
This fic was a slow build up for me and the half-way point was so unexpected; at first I was like o.O and then I was like 0.0 and then I was like ♥_♥ [6]
I've reread this fic numerous times because it is just that good. Howard is pretty much my favorite in this. He usually gets a hard time in most fic with Tony but in this he is sympathetic and goes a long way to heal their relationship. For anyone reading this for the first time you will probably have to go back and read it again because there is a really big twist that makes the whole story. Not that it is a hardship to read this twice.[7]
I really like this time-travel AU. It gave me a really good feel for the characters and was overall a great introduction to Stony. It’s a classic, so… can’t really go wrong.[8]
Guys THIS FIC. There was a twist I wasn’t expecting and it blew my mind and the construction of the entire plot is just ajdskhas. I can’t. This fic is one that when I see I freak out a little and have to read it some more. The usual concept of Steve thinking Tony looks like someone from the past- Howard- is used but manipulated in a way I honestly wasn’t expecting.[9]
I can’t describe much about it without giving the plot away. Some people are really good at waiting. Serious drama and coming home.[10]
