The Pits Questionnaire was a Starsky & Hutch survey which asked fans about their opinions regarding the nature of the David Starsky and Kenneth Hutchinson personal relationship.

It was printed in The Pits #2 in 1980.

The survey itself is partly a discussion topic, part tongue-in-cheek commentary, and part meta. The editors added this at the end: "(Ed. Note: The results of this questionnaire will not be tabulated, so please do not return it to us. We hate questionnaires.)"

A Response to an Earlier Survey

It was created in response to what some fans felt to be an overly simplified and incomplete similar survey sent to 60 fans in late 1979. That survey's results (based on 39 returned forms) were printed in S&H #6 in January 1980: "Do they" or "Don't they"? (7 say they "do", 26 say they "don't), one person said, "They did, but they don't anymore, but they could."

The introduction to the questionnaire in "The Pits" mentions this previous survey:

In a recent issue of that fine letterzine, S&H, we were asked to provide information in the interests of gathering data about our small but hardy fandom. We willingly provided this information; we are not a snob, after all. But we did find this questionnaire to be sadly lacking in scope. One question read simply "Oh yes they do/Oh no they don't". (If you need a definition of exactly what it is they do or don't do, please go on to the next feature, as this will make absolutely no sense to you whatsoever.)

Now, choosing either/or seems to us to be rather limiting. Thus, in the ongoing spirit of public service found in THE PITS, we now present the Expanded Do They/Don't They Questionnaire. Please check as many choices as you deem applicable or appropriate. You will note that we have left a space at the bottom of each list for possibilities we had not considered. We would be grateful if you would let us in on them.
