The Great Gatsby is a novel by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, published in 1925 that focuses on the main character Nick Carraway who moves to the fictional town of West Egg on Long Island. It details his interactions with his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom Buchanan, their friend Jordan Baker, and the elusive Jay Gatsby.
Several adaptations of the novel have been produced over the years, including – but not exclusively – films, plays, and musicals. With the book becoming public domain, many fanwriters edited their works in order to publish them professionally, an example is irisbleufic and their work The Pursued and The Pursuing.[note 1]
Fandom
May be considered by some to be a small fandom, since 2004 different fanworks are being posted on AO3 until March 2022, accounting for almost 800 works in total. One of the most profilics fanwriters of fandom is Argyle, who posts mainly at LiveJournal under argyleheir account.
The 2013 release of the film, with Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby and Tobey Maguire as Nick, increased the popularity of fanworks and Lana Del Rey's Young & Beautiful theme song influenced the fandom as a whole. Fanarts and picspam became hits on Tumblr as well as vids on YouTube and TikTok
Shipping
- Daisy Buchanan/Jay Gatsby- This pairing is the focus of the whole novel, and was at one point canon. However, during the timeline described in the novel, they are not together.
- Nick Carraway/Jordan Baker- A canon pairing for a portion of the novel.
- Daisy Buchanan/Tom Buchanan- A married couple, completely canon.
- Jay Gatsby/Nick Carraway- the only M/M pairing. Pretty rare, but, in 2013, an article[1], was published about the gay subtext in the book.
