Lana Del Rey (born Elizabeth Woolridge Grant) is a famous American indie pop singer-songwriter, who in 2011-12 was a big part of the tumblr sad girl trend because of her songs "Summertime Sadness" and "Born to Die". It is also referenced as an inspiration for the Flower Crown trope.
Her music is noted for its stylized, cinematic quality and exploration of themes of sadness, tragic romance, glamor, and melancholia, containing many references to pop culture, particularly 1950s and 1960s Americana. See Wikipedia for more.
Her songs and lyrics are often used in fanworks: as the song choice in fanvids (see Young and Beautiful as an example), as the title in fanfics, and as the theme for aesthetics (usually AUs).
After an interview in 2014, one of her lines -- I wish I was dead already[1] -- became a popular meme in Brazil,[2] which led to several montages with various characters from different fandoms saying the same line or acting as Lana in the respective interview.
In 2013 she released "Young & Beautiful" for the soundtrack of The Great Gatsby, which was used in many fanfics and vids in many different fandoms.
Fans have also written RPF about Lana Del Rey. On AO3 the Lana Del Ray character tag contains 64 fanworks, and the fandom tag contains 82 fanworks as of September 2022.
