The Beast of Times: "What a Yo-Yo" is a gen and het Beauty and the Beast 60-page zine by P.S. Nim.

front cover

While it is labeled v.1, there are no other volumes.

The plot involves a mystery about a lost yellow yo-yo which contains a key that opens a toy safe with contains microform of Rita Terrell's Beastcake Calendar.

It contains artwork (138 panels), almost all by P.S. Nim. Beth Blighton, Rita Terrell, Kristy Effinger, Jane Freeman, Sue Glasgow, Nancy Stasulis, Kriss Farver, Sherlea Hatcher, Sue K, and Barbara Gipson each illustrate a single panel in the series portraying Vincent in their own individual style as he tries to decide "How shall I appear to Catherine tonight?"

Some of the panels portray Vincent with a petulant teenage attitude and Father (dressed in a ridiculous 16th century outfit) as a bit of a nagging papa. Catherine serves Vincent supper: a bowl of cat food and a can of B&B Lite beer. Catherine is shown at work with a large pile of "briefs," a nod to her work as a lawyer. Several panels include a bouquet of flowers with a note from Catherine's various suitors on the show.

Books in Vincent's Library

One panel portrays Vincent's library. The books there are fannish commentary.

Some riff on classics and poetry. Some poke fun at fandom and fans. Some are jabs at TPTB. And some are cultural and political commentary.

Reactions and Reviews

Graphic parody involving, among other things, Vincent posing for Beastcake calendars. As usual, pointed, well-conceived and drawn, and very funny. [1]
