The Beast of Times: "What a Yo-Yo" is a gen and het Beauty and the Beast 60-page zine by P.S. Nim.
While it is labeled v.1, there are no other volumes.
The plot involves a mystery about a lost yellow yo-yo which contains a key that opens a toy safe with contains microform of Rita Terrell's Beastcake Calendar.
It contains artwork (138 panels), almost all by P.S. Nim. Beth Blighton, Rita Terrell, Kristy Effinger, Jane Freeman, Sue Glasgow, Nancy Stasulis, Kriss Farver, Sherlea Hatcher, Sue K, and Barbara Gipson each illustrate a single panel in the series portraying Vincent in their own individual style as he tries to decide "How shall I appear to Catherine tonight?"
Some of the panels portray Vincent with a petulant teenage attitude and Father (dressed in a ridiculous 16th century outfit) as a bit of a nagging papa. Catherine serves Vincent supper: a bowl of cat food and a can of B&B Lite beer. Catherine is shown at work with a large pile of "briefs," a nod to her work as a lawyer. Several panels include a bouquet of flowers with a note from Catherine's various suitors on the show.
Books in Vincent's Library
One panel portrays Vincent's library. The books there are fannish commentary.
Some riff on classics and poetry. Some poke fun at fandom and fans. Some are jabs at TPTB. And some are cultural and political commentary.
Sample titles:
- "Helpers Directory Volume 2,387,572,968,542,998" (a nod to The Helper's Network Directory's many issues)
- "Lost Horizons" by Jeff Sagansky (a jab at CBS programmer Sagansky's decisions regarding the show)
- "Striking It Rich in Ant Farming" by Trump" (an observation about greed, grift, and tackiness)
- "At the Stage Door" by "Perlman's Posse" (a nod to a fan club)
- "Lives of the Saints Vol. III" by "St. George R.R. Martin" (our hero)
- "Cease and Desist" by "Carol Co" (about The Beauty and the Beast Cease and Desist Letters)
- "Denizens of the Deep" by "Linda Lovelace-Hamilton" (an "adult" nod to Linda Lovelace and Linda Hamilton)
- "Total Beast" by Marabel Morgan (a nod to Marabel Morgan and "The Total Woman")
- "A Habit of Creature" by "Elizabeth Sprague, DVM" (Elizabeth Sprague is the veterinarian in the zine, Love Bade Me Welcome)
- "Incognito Ergo Sum" by Cynthia Hatch (a shout-out to a fan author)
- "Duping Fandom for Fun and Profit" by FAM ("Duping" refers to making copies of videotapes, as well as tricking people; both refer to Beauty and the Beast and The Family Channel Controversies)
- "A Few Good Fen"
