Hi, I made this page because I've seen other pages link to it, but while I'm a casual xianxia fan and acquainted with wuxia, I'm not at all Chinese and have very possibly missed some nuances. Also I don't really know what wuxia works are popular in China or in Western fandom outside of the biggest ones. So yeah, any help is appreciated. Thank you! Does this Need More Fandom?

I added then removed the Template:NeedsMoreFandom tag, because I'm not sure that glossary pages necessarily need fandom discussion? But since we're Fanlore not Wikipedia it seems like something that would be the preferred focus of the page, so I'll just leave a comment here on the talk page instead. I realize that this is a pretty vague request, but I don't really know more C-media than NinthFeather so I'm not really sure what concrete suggestions to provide. Maybe this question will help: what do we want this page to contain that makes it worth having here, as opposed to linking to Wikipedia's page for wuxia? Quaelegit (talk) 09:08, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

I agree, this needs more fandom, though I don't know much about wuxia beyond Word of Honor. I added the flag to the page. Although the history of the genre might be relevant if framed in relation to fandom, currently most of the information on this page doesn't seem appropriate for Fanlore. I added a links section for online resources that explain what wuxia is. If there are more fansites or web forums that focus on the wuxia genre, those would be good to add. A history that focuses more on Chinese fans' interest rather than the genre itself could be interesting. Fan translation is a fanwork/fanactivity that could be covered here as well. I would expect to see a list of wuxia canons that have or had active fandoms, rather than titles that were merely popular with audiences, like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (26 fanworks on AO3, vs. 1700+ for The Romance of the Three Kingdoms). If there are wuxia AU fanworks or fanworks that focus particularly on wuxia elements, that would be a good section to have. This line in the history section hints at something that seems relevant to Fanlore: Chinese diaspora writing in English as well as translations of Chinese-language works have spread the genre into English-speaking fandom. Wuxia fandom is absolutely a thing, though I don't know a lot about it. My internet circles have more involvement in xianxia fandom--which btw anything we decide on here should probably also get applied to that page. In both cases, they are genres like scifi or time travel so maybe we could use those pages as guides for what kinds of expansion this page needs. (In fact, I just found a website claiming that a lot of western sf/f like Star Wars and Harry Potter gets classified as Wuxia in Chinese markets. IDK if that's true, I don't read Chinese at all and the division between Chinese and Western web makes it hard to even access the spaces where this would be relevant.) I'll try asking in some of the places I've seen people talking about it, if anyone has suggestions for what to add to this article and xianxia. Quaelegit (talk) 16:12, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
