I note the radio cat has just been added to this -- I thought about adding it but decided against because podcasts aren't radio. Should we have a new fandoms by canon type category (which is not likely to become highly populated), or make it clear that podcasts should be included in the radio category? I think it makes sense to keep podcasts and radio in the same category, considering their similarity (Wikipedia has podcasts under "radio by medium") and the fact that the separate categories would be tiny. Plus we already have Category:Podcasts for fan podcasts. I vote for just changing the Radio category's description to include podcasts, or we could change the name to something like "Category:Radio & Podcasts" if that'd be confusing. --sparc (talk) 17:51, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
They'd certainly both be small, so it makes sense to combine them. I personally would find it confusing to silently combine radio & podcasts (to a dinosaur like me they're distinctly different media) -- I'd suggest using "Audio" as a category name, but of course we've already used it elsewhere. "Audio Fandoms", perhaps? Espresso Addict (talk) 18:03, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
Hm, to me "Audio" implies things other than Podcast & Radio, like music. But I can't really think of a category name that would work without sounding strange and forced... --sparc (talk) 09:44, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
How about a category structure like Audio Fandoms, with subcats of Radio, Podcasts, Music, and any others that are audio based? It might also be worth creating a category Fan Podcasts and having it a subcat of Podcasts, to distinguish between fan podcasts and podcasts that are fandoms. Lanna (talk) 13:18, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
We only have the one podcast fandom so far, and we generally don't make categories unless we're expecting at least ten pages in them. We do have a Music RPF category. Fandoms for music videos or songs that might have 5 fics on the AO3 tend to not get documented at all on Fanlore because there's no actual fan community for them. A general Category:Audio Fandoms might work. We do have a Podcasts category that is for fannish podcasts, and I think if we put it under a canon type category, it would become even more hopelessly confusing than it already is. It is a subset of Audio, which is under the Fan Activities hierarchy. Here is some background on the mess that is Fandoms by Canon Type.
I think I'll take a stroll through the categories and check that we've got enough navigation instruction.--æþel (talk) 16:59, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
