Talk:Purchasing Fanworks
Is it possible to broaden this beyond zines? Fan art originals, for instance, are still commonly sold and the transaction doesn't seem to attract the opprobrium that has been thrown at zines since fandom moved online. Espresso Addict (talk) 03:10, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
- I added some sections for further expansion and started an intro to signal the scope of the page. Feel free to add more.--æþel (talk) 21:59, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for broadening it. It's very much a work in progress, and there's so much more than needs to be added. --Mrs. Potato Head (talk) 22:21, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
- I've added a couple of notes from my personal experiences, which might or might not be representative, but I don't have any references to hand on the subject. Espresso Addict (talk) 16:54, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

"It's not unheard of for fan writers to ask for donations to cover their living expenses while continuing to write a popular story, but it is not usually phrased as purchasing the fanfiction." The only time I've heard of this was the Cousin Jean thing, and that stood out as it being incredibly rare. Am I missing other examples? If not, this should be rephrased to emphasize zines are technically non-profit, with the purchase fee for non-tribbers going to cover expenses of printing the actual zine, and possibly a small startup for the next zine in a series -- that "profit" is frowned upon. --Mrs. Potato Head (talk) 22:48, 10 June 2013 (UTC)
- The case I'm thinking of particularly (regarding online fanfiction) happened on my f'list a few years ago. I don't know how common it is, but that's two examples...
- I think the zine material sits ill in the fanfiction section, as zines already have their own section. As to profit in zine production, that is a whole enormous argument. I know one Blake's 7 zine publisher was accused of making big profits, but I don't know how credible the accusation was. As a one-time zine publisher, I know profit in zines is very hard to define. - Profit, "profit," and zines is discussed at the Profit and Fandom page at some length and yes, a huge topic for various reasons. The rarity, in my mind, were the instances of direct request for money to write fanfic. It's an interesting topic that would be a good one to expand on the Profit and Fandom page, which is linked to this page. --Mrs. Potato Head (talk) 01:42, 11 June 2013 (UTC)
