Talk:Nazi

I don't think Nazi really works to title a page about the fetishizing of Nazi imagery or writing Nazi characters, which is the content we have (so far). I know very little about this area of AUs in fiction, though I do know that a J2 bigbang this year had a Nazi setting and it was extremely controversial within spnpermanon. My gut feeling is that these fanworks are so different from other WWII AUs, though they can be problematic as well, that I'm not sure if just making this War AU or WWII AU would work. Nazi Imagery and Settings? Nazi Characters and Imagery? --facetofcathy 22:31, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

There are a couple different things going on in the page: Nazi imagery used in fanworks (fanart, cosplay, etc.), Nazi characters in canon, and Nazi AUs. We could split the page in two: one as an overview page -- Nazi Characters, Imagery, and Setting or some such title -- and one Nazi AU page or section on a World War II AU page (though they may be different enough for a separate page).--æthel 23:22, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
This was actually my first thought about this page too. But upon reflection, I'm not sure that detaching discussions of art or cosplay from fiction is a good idea. I think it is easier--more obvious, something--to see the fetishization in visual media, but fic might cause a less visceral reaction, and is just plain easier not to read than a piece of art is to not see. I would call the TOS episode with the faux Nazis and the scene with the boots as problematic as a lot of the art linked on this page and the distressingly long list of fics that have been set in concentration camps, so I think talking about that all in one place is necessary.--facetofcathy 13:04, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Re: TOS episode and fanart, I think there are more could be said about how the combination could lead to questionable stuffs. When I was indexing for st_fanart_meme, there was a prompt for uniforms and one of the response was a drawing was Kirk & Spock in Nazi uniforms: http://community.livejournal.com/st_fanart_meme/282.html?thread=389914#t389914 (scroll down to last comment). This was before I knew about the TOS episode and even after googling and knowing about it, I still don't know how to react. (P.S. I really appreciated all the content you've been adding.) --wistfuljane 15:50, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I put the link between the blatantly sexualized fetish to popular media fetishization (which I don't actually see as inherently different, but I expect others do) in the cosplay section, but I think that needs to be up top. I agree that something about the way fans take iffy canon or media inspiration and magnify the iffy parts is needed here and on the Historical AU page. There is more than one AU out there based on the film Bent, but I seriously don't want to go looking for them. I will try to find the spnpermanon threads though. I'll think on it and hopefully others will add some stuff.--facetofcathy 16:18, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

The original article link from 2010 is "File Not Found" on 9-8-20, same with the "comments" link. However, the Webcite link to the board comments (overwhelmingly expressing outrage) does work. I don't think we can see the original photo anymore which they are discussing, but it is probably for the best. Pcdfanwriter (talk) 18:46, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
