Talk:Mary Renault
I have to question the "possibly apocryphal" for Bagoas here -- there are a number of different ancient sources that mention him specifically as Alexander's eromenos or say that Alexander had a sexual relationship with him. While there are some questions about exactly which people mentioned by that name in various sources are the same person, unless we're going to figure that Plutarch, Dicaearchus, and Quintus Curtius Rufus were all on crack about this point, I think it's really a stretch to say his existence or relationship with Alexander is apocryphal.--Penknife 19:17, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- You're right -- it was a sloppy way of saying, "made a whole story around a set of references". I'm totally happy with your changes.--Sherrold 00:44, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- And quit making fun of my non-existant spelling skills! Help, help, I'm being repressed!--Sherrold 00:45, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- Now we see the violence inherent in the system! No, srsly, both spellings are correct, it's just an issue of how you romanize the Greek; I did go check, though, and Renault went with Hephaistion.--Penknife 01:00, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

I replaced the slash fan quote with a Renault quote because the text about explicit detail was talking about the books being written in the 1950s (not all of them were - the Alexander novels were published in the 1970s) although the quote came from a review of The Persian Boy. And seeing Renault has addressed the level of explicitness in her work, I thought it make sense to cite it here.--Queenypolita 11:12, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
Restructuring Notable Works - I think having fic grouped under relevant book(s) makes this section more informative and easier to read. I know there's fic for The Last of the Wine even if I didn't add any examples. Is Notable Works a heading Fanlore page should have? I tried to find examples of it on other pages but didn't find any (in my admittedly not very thorough search). Is Fanart a relevant heading for Fanlore pages - I think there's some posted to the LJ comms occasionally.--Queenypolita 14:41, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
- "Notable Works" or "Influential Works" appear as headings for some fandom and fan writer pages. However, I don't think there's a standardized format. "Fanart" is used on other fandom pages that do have a lot of fanart produced. If there's no fanart for Mary Renault's books, then there's no need to have a fanart heading.--Aethel 19:34, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
This article represents a fandom as well as a person, yes? Should we add "Fandom By Source Community" or "Fandom By Source Text" category?
Incidentally, there are dead links to "The Persian Boy" in other articles--should those be redirected here, or will there be a separate Persian Boy article?--Aethel 19:45, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
- I'm blanking on the author&book, but I saw one book set up as a subpage of the author name, which seemed like a brilliant solution to me. --Arduinna 20:04, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
- Not sure if this is the page you mean but it seems LJ Smith page has two book subpages. It seems like a good solution. --Queenypolita 22:36, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
in their own words:new page?
It looks like there's enough to say about this project for it to get its own page.--æthel 16:52, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- ITOWverse now spun off -- Greer Watson 05:24, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
