Honestly, this article is such an example of Fanlore Gone Wrong. I really think this kind of derogatory bashing of a fan (no matter what one thinks of their works) should not be on this Wiki. and the source is basically just wank. :-/
- Looks like this term was used in 2013, but is so obscure that a search of it on Google, Tumblr, and Twitter brings up little to nothing. There's one reference to this specific use of it on Twitter, with the rest seemingly referring to "kittyfic" as a fanfic in which someone is made a cat-person. On Tumblr there are no results, and on Google it's really just this article. So while Fanlore does strive to document terms and occurrences even if they are negative, and there is no notoriety requirement, I do think it's worth nothing that this term being used as described is so obscure that it does seem like it was only used to poke fun at one person, specifically, and hasn't been used since. In that case, is it worth documenting a term used exclusively to poke fun at one person and was only used a few times in 2013 for that purpose? Or could this page possibly be re-purposed to refer to kittyfic as in a fic where the characters are made into cat people (which while also obscure as a term, used much more on twitter than the definition as it is here)? It's hard for me to decide what would be best, considering there isn't any notoriety requirement on Fanlore, but at the same time Gwefr has a point that this term wasn't used outside of a very tiny, short-lived pocket online to speak ill of a single person's fanfiction. Perhaps it would be best to see what other's think? Patchlamb (talk) 23:41, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- I searched fail_fandomanon[1] and found 298 uses over the course of years. It probably has even more uses in forums or communities for yuletide. It appears to be a fail_fandomanon/dreamwidth exchange fandom term and not a tumblr or twitter term.--aethel (talk) 02:15, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
- P.S. I didn't find any references to kittyfic on AO3, but I did find a few on twitter: list of glossary terms, My elitist, horrible opinion is that in order to consider your fic anything but kittyfic, you need to actually CONSUME the canon. In some form.--aethel (talk) 02:23, 6 November 2021 (UTC) If you can search sitewide dreamwidth comments, there are quite a few mentions in coaltide and yuletide_coal.[2][3]--aethel (talk) 02:32, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks! That's great! I'm not on fail_fandomanon or anything with yuletide, and to be honest find navigating fail_fandomanon a bit difficult, so that's great info. I had been trying to find more meta or positive quotes on it to balance out the negative one here, but couldn't find anything anywhere I was looking. Since it's been used much more than I thought I can edit the page a bit to expand upon its usefulness, and maybe leave a brief mention of the cat-person fics too. Thanks Aethel! I want to add a little context I found about the original comment on this talk page: it seems that this fanlore article, which documents a term commonly used on FFA, was linked in a yuletide chat that is anti-FFA.[4]--aethel (talk) 16:41, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
