Talk:Goodbye, my brothers...
Discord Discussion about Featured Article Nomination
Copying over the discussion that User:Kingstoken and I had on the Fanlore discord server about how to make this page ready for Featured Article status. I'm copying it over here because I think it provides some interesting context for the artwork, and if anyone else wants to look into the popularity/history of the artwork they might find it useful to see the details of the research Kingstoken did!

@kingstoken I think one thing that I'd like to see is more explanation of the work's prominence. Like from fbv's response, and all the more "professional" reviews on the fanlore page, it seems to be very well known/memorable/important, but reading the page I couldn't really get a sense for why pr how that is the case
Er, well, maybe "why is this famous" is unanswerable but more description on the page showing how its famous, I guess. Maybe discussing it's impact on the fandom in derivative works, references, or people discussing it over time?

yeah some expansion on fan reactions and the spread of its fame might be interesting
I don't even know how I came to know of it
and i would love to know that
kingstoken — 10/20/2022
I see your point, I'm just not sure I could explain exactly why they were famous, like from what I have been able to find these pieces of art were shared a lot back in 2013, and they became very well known in their own right. However, as far as I can tell they didn't inspire any derivative works at least not that I could easily find.

I was looking up a few more fan reviews and I think I found the best reactionGoodbye, My Brothers series by DeadPea
Or as I like to call it, HOW COULD YOU MAKE THIS YOU MONSTER!kingstoken — 10/20/2022
I just found some great fan comments on a hip hop forum where someone posted the art, I swear doing research for Fanlore articles sometimes takes me to really unexcepted sites

I just thought of the term I was probably looking for yesterday is that they kind of went viral (as far as a piece of art can go viral). quaelegit — 10/21/2022
okay, thanks for looking! I still think the page could benefit from description of the fame/how it spread
kingstoken — 10/21/2022
Yeah the problem is I just don't know the answer of how it spread, all I know is it was shared all over the place
quaelegit — 10/21/2022
like you said you found discussion on a hiphop forum! And those magazine quotes... like, idk how typical it is for those publications to discuss fanart, but maybe talk about whether it's unusual for fanart to get articl3es in those place?
sorry, i think i keep asking you to come up with "why" when that's a really difficult (if not unanswerable) question! It's not like you were in all of these people's heads and it would be a phenomenal amount of work to track them down and ask them now. But basically i think i ant to see more describing this spread/fame, because the block of quotes doesn't really illustrate it (for me, at least)
like, i see these images (which are, admittedly, quite nice looking, but not out of step w/ the quality of fanart I see on my tumblr dash every day), and I see a lot of quotes talking about how sad it made people (but I'm not in the TMNT fandom in the slightest so it doesn't make much sense to me) and I'm just left with a feeling of "why is important? what's everyone reacting to? why do we care almost a decade later?" so I think more context for those quotes, at least, would help me out

Yeah, this one is a tough one for me to answer, like when I wrote up the article for the Fan.tasia vid it was easy because I was there when it got shared on Reddit and went viral, but in this case I am trying to piece together what happened back in 2012/2013.
One thing that maybe helped it's popularity is that three of the pieces were Daily Deviations on Deviantart, which would have put them on Deviantart's front page (at least I think that is how it works)

I think if you grew up with the Turtles you got really attached to them, usually to one turtle in particular, when I was doing Twitter searches, most of them were just a link to the art and a little comment like Raph sobs or Mikey TT_TT. I think a lot of it has to do with childhood nostalgia and how painful it is to think of your faves dying or being left alone. Also, for a lot of people TMNT was their first fandom, so there is a lot of stuff tied up in it.

@quaelegit Okay I did a little more digging, and did a reverse image search with Tineye, and looks like the Michagello piece was a Daily Devintation on August 2, 2013, on August 27, 2013 io9.com (now known as gizmodo) wrote a piece called Is this the most gut-wrenching Ninja Turtles fan art ever made? (which we quote on the page), from there it seemed to spread to other news outlets (they tend to copy each other), then also in August 2013 there were a series of Tumblr posts some of them very popular, like one had over 1400 notes if I remember correctly, and then it spread like a web from there
Now I am just going to have to think about how to write about all that for the article 🤔
quaelegit — 10/21/2022
Thanks for doing all of this research, I think this writeup should definitely go on the page!
oh, i see you're on it!
will vote soon 😛
