Zine Art?
There was a revival of interest in Art Nouveau in the 1960s that lasted through the '80s. This was the golden age of zines and it seems possible that the aesthetic may have influenced zine art. So far, I've only stumbled across one Klimt-inspired piece on Fanlore, from a 1977 issue of a Star Trek zine. Doe anyone know of any other Art Nouveau-inspired fanart from this period? Would help to round out the examples on this page. Night Rain (talk) 06:04, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
Category?
Looks like this is a pretty big page of examples that might get bigger. Do we have a precedent for art categories based on style? I'm not sure how granular you'd want it - pastiche? art nouveau? klimt? I guess it would depend if we're only scratching the surface or if there are a lot more examples of this sort. (Depending on what level of abstraction we're talking about, these works could absolutely be fanwork of particular art nouveau artists...) Distracteddaydreamer (talk) 15:06, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
- There is a precedent for listing art in a fandom category when there isn't an art-specific sub-category (e.g. Category:Dragon Age Art). So, if one regards Art Nouveau as a fandom in its own right, then having "Category:Art Nouveau" wouldn't be inconsistent. Not every fandom centers on specific people, characters, and works of fiction. Some, like mythology-based fandoms, focus on broader elements of culture.
- The selection of Art Nouveau-inspired fanart in this article seems to represent only a fraction of what's out there. I deliberately limited the number of Kiss-inspired pieces to a sampling of what's currently on "The Kiss" page. I selected only three pieces from Amanda Bell's full Eevolution series. I selected only Uranus and Neptune (a canonical couple) from Draw-out-loud's full series of Sailor Senshi. There is a lot of Mucha-inspired fanart. The links section is currently a bit sparse because my main aim was to find CC-licensed examples to showcase. If the galleries grow so long as to present loading scrolling issues, then it may be preferrable to divide the page into a number of spin-off articles. These could be for artists (Mucha and Klimt are the obvious candidates) and for specific works and series (e.g. a single article for Mucha's Seasons series vs. articles for every individual piece).
- I'd also like to incorporate some fannish perspectives on Art Nouveau into the article. Why did it become a popular aesthetic in fandom? Why do certain fandoms favour it over others? Why do artists create Art Nouveau fanart? Why do some fans dislike it? Night Rain (talk) 20:31, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
- If we make a category for artistic works using the Art Noveau style, I would name it "Art Nouveau fanworks", to provide a consistent standard for sorting works by art style and to avoid confusion. Pinky G Rocket (talk) 21:26, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- Would it also make sense to have an "Art Nouveau" category for containing articles about original works and artists? It feels like this subject may grow into a series of pages rather than just the one. Also maybe a "Fine Art" category which could slot into Category:Fandoms by Canon Type? Daydreamer is right that imitations might also be viewed as fanart of the original works or artists. I've already made a page for Cabanel's Fallen Angel. I'd like to create one for the Mona Lisa and The Swing. There's a lot of ground that could be covered! Night Rain (talk) 22:22, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

- Possibly? We may want to consider a category as a whole for art pieces that are commonly the subject of fannish parody, homage or pastiche, but I'm not sure what that would be named/called just yet. Pinky G Rocket (talk) 01:11, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
- I went ahead and created Category:Fine Art. Also thinking of launching a project dedicated to exploring the intersection between art history and fandom. There's way more ground to cover here than I was expecting. I think this has solidified my interest in such a project. It doesn't seem to have been widely noticed the "Art Deco Avengers Tarot" isn't actually Art Deco! Night Rain (talk) 05:53, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
