Pokémon (short for Pocket Monsters) are fictional creatures from the Pokémon franchise. There are over a thousand canonical species of Pokémon. Pokémon often resemble animals but may also resemble plants, inanimate objects, or even humanoids.
In the Pokémon world, humans keep Pokémon as pets or raise them to compete in Pokémon battles.
Fans may invent their own original Pokémon species; for example, original Eeveelutions are common. Canonical species are sometimes drawn as gijinka.
Pokémon are sometimes brought into other universes in fusion fanworks. The opposite is also common, where characters from another universe come to the Pokemon universe and are given Pokémon companions.
