Spider-Man AU is a popular fusion trope in the Stranger Things fandom, also present in other fandoms, in which a character from the given fandom is Spider-Man. They usually incorporate few or no Marvel characters, though they may have ST characters take their places, and instead only use the superhero role.
Development

Spider-Man AUs first appeared in the Stranger Things fandom in April 2021, when a Billy/Steve fic was published that featured Steve Harrington as Spider-Man and Billy Hargrove as Venom.[1] The second fic appears to be from July 2022 and stars Robin Buckley as Spider-Girl.[2] Published shortly after is another with Steve as Spider-Man, this time a Steddie fic,[3] and he continued to appear in the same role in a number of fics in the months after. Will Byers was first Spider-Man in late August,[4] and ended up being a very popular choice.[5] In September, a fan wrote a fic in which Stranger Things characters made up the entire Avengers team, including Lucas Sinclair as Spider-Man.[6] One fic incorporated a Mad Max fusion and had Max Mayfield as Spider-Man.[7]
TikTok
TikTok user roguealien has been credited as helping to popularize Steddie Spider-Man AUs, and their fanart and fancomics can be found on TikTok and Instagram.[8] Cosplays appeared in October 2022,[9] not long after roguealien began posting their works.[10]
