Soulmates - A Neverending Dream is a het Beauty and the Beast anthology of stories, poems and non-fiction published by C.A.B.B..

It was published on a quarterly basis (March, June, September, December). The subscription rate was a steep $35/year.

The zine's title was often shortened to "SND," a reference to the Classic phrase, She's Not Dead. This is reflected in its contents. From issue #5:

SND is open to all submissions -- must be first and/or second season oriented and/or SND. Third season events can be depicted as long as there is a "happy ending". In other words, Catherine must be alive and well and living happily ever after with her Vincent. We are especially looking for romantic and tender scenarios. Rating is PG-13 to a mild R.

This zine provided no contributor's copies:

Please note -- all submissions must be voluntary. Finances dictate that we cannot provide contributor's copies, though we are planning on a small token of our appreciation for anyone who submits and is accepted.

Issue 1

Soulmates - A Neverending Dream 1 was published in March 1994 and contains 55 pages.

The editors talk about the zine's mascot, a rescue cat they named Lady Catherine. There is some information about fans letters to TPTB and how these communications make a difference in possibly "pursuing a B&B project."

The editors also write about fan letters: "While we don't plan on printing letters other than responses to Elaine's column (we have this horrible fear of becoming a letterzine), we do welcome your ideas and comments. You can send them to me or Barb and we will try to respond to them."

From the long editorial:

Welcome to SOULMATES: A NEVERENDING DREAM — now known affectionately as SND [1]. While we in no way wish to hurt or insult anyone who found something of value in any episode from third season, we are definitely trying to make a statement. For Teri and I, and a lot of other fans, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is and always will be what they gave us in the first forty-four episodes — a very special romance. Considering our title, we can and will consider stories that filter into "Though Lovers Be Lost" as long as the ending is SND (She's Not Dead). This is the only sort of third season story we can and will allow. Catherine and Vincent are and always will be alive and well and loving — Soulmates. Hence, our title. We recognize the right of anyone to accept and to read and write third season, but by the same token, we recognize the right of 'classic' fans to refuse to accept it.

We would love to hear from any classic fans who have something they would like to share with us. So many of you say, "I don't have any talent." You'd be surprised at how many 'untalented' fans write some good stories. I think I'm a good example. I have never considered myself talented. Teri, with her wonderful grasp of the characters in her artwork is talented. I just got lucky — I put a few words together and was brave (maybe the word I should use here is brazen) enough to publish them. Several people seemed to enjoy reading them, so I did it again. Like I said, I got lucky. So, to any of you shy fans who have kept your words and/or art under wraps — please give us a try.

Do you sometimes find a rare book whose hero and/or heroine have the same qualities of our two favorite lovers? Well, I do and often. I admit to being a romance novel addict and a pop music buff. So every time I hear a new song that reminds me of "B&B", I usually record it on tape, and as for the books, I always write my own 'review' on the inside fly leaf of everyone I read. I'd like to share some of my favorite books and songs that closely resemble Catherine and Vincent..."

Issue 2

Soulmates - A Neverending Dream 2 was published in June 1994 and contains 63 pages.

The long editorial describes a trip to Hamilton, Ontario, as well as Niagara Falls. The visit to Hamilton included a rides on a carousel, including a lovely lion. The editor talks about the difficulties of getting to a convention. The third issue of this zine is filling up with submissions. She also has this comment: "It has come to our attention that some fans are experiencing serious problems with certain editors and/or publishers. If you have such a problem, please contact either myself or Teri. We'll try to help as much as we can."

  • from the editorial: "We really are trying to do something different here; something that has not been done within the B&B realm as far as we know. Our aim is for SND to be a well-rounded, classic BEAUTY & THE BEAST magazine. A little something for everyone. We want you to feel free to let us know where you think improvements can be made. We're open to suggestions, and while we can't promise to always follow through, we do promise to consider all of your ideas, The only guideline we will fight to the death for is SHE'S NOT DEAD!... Because she's not."

Issue 3

Soulmates - A Neverending Dream 3 was published in September 1994 and contains 65 pages.

From the editorial:

Welcome to our third issue. So far, so good. Everyone seems t o be satisfied with what Teri and I are doing here, but if anyone has any suggestions, we'd love to here from you. Also, we'd love hear from you all about bloopers, goofs, and all around snafus they've seen in any of the episodes. And how about songs and/ or stories that make you remember a certain favorite television series? Come on people, send us those cards and letters.

I've enclosed a form for everyone to fill out with regards to their favorite fanzine, artwork, etc. Please take a moment to fill it out and return it to me as soon as possible. I'm a slow counter.

We've been doing some serious figuring here, folks , and have come to the conclusion that we are unfortunately going to have to ask for an increase in the subscription rates if we're to continue past the December issue. There are different ways we can go - - we can either cut back to three issues, instead of four, and leave the price at $25.00 (mailing would be upgraded to third class postage, as opposed to book rate -- that way you'd get it quicker). Or we could increase the price to $35.00, and keep SND at four issues per year, with third class postage. If anyone wishes to upgrade their issues to first class, they could include an extra $6.00 per year.

[snipped]

So, that's the bad news -- the good news is that we promise to keep giving you the quantity and the quality that you've come to expect. And, hopefully, we'll even get some of the newer people to fandom to join in.

Issue 4

Soulmates - A Neverending Dream 4 was published in December 1994 and contains 77 pages

From one of the editors, Barbara Hill:

Like Teri, I agree completely with everything Lynette has said in her letter. I sincerely feel that most of us "classics" did give third season at least a try. I know of several friends who did. That"", did not like the new "format" or didn't like the fact that they brutally ended a "Once Upon A Time" fairy tale romance should be our right. Just as anyone who found something to like about third season has a right to their feelings. I cannot understand why everyone has to agree about what we wanted cut of the series. Over the course of the past few years, Teri and I have become very close friends, and we don't, and never have, totally agreed on certain aspects of all three seasons, fan stories, etc. I've decided very early on in our relationship to agree to disagree about these things and get on with our newly-found friendship and the fun and satisfaction BEAUTY AND THE BEAST provided us with.

I am hoping to attend the L.A. Convention, (with no babies and/or weddings on the horizon, I'm certainly going to give it a try) and if I do I will be very selective about what, if any panel. I will attend. And while I certainly would have no interest in seeing third season guests, I have no intention of boycotting the con, and I promise to be polite and civil no matter who I run into. That said, I hope that the powers-that-be behind the convention will take heed of Lynette's letter, and take into consideration everyone's feelings when it comes to con scheduling.

Issue 5

Soulmates - A Neverending Dream 5 was published in March 1995 and contains 63 pages.

From the editorial:

I know I have mentioned this before, and 1*11 probably mention it again, but any of you who long for the *good old days,* when we actually debated the episodes in a civilized way, be sure to check out Joyce's letterzine, "Classic Connection." It's terrific. You'll find her address (along with another plug, back in the "Can We Talk?" section.) A few months ago, around the time the "Classic Connection" was born, some of us were bemoaning the fact that classic fans seemed to have no unity. We knew there were hordes of us out there from the sales of our 'zines, etc., but aside from that we were becoming totally out of contact with anyone who wasn't within our immediate group. Joyce, for example, had friends Barband and I had never heard of and vice versa. Hence "The Classic Alliance of Beauty and the Beast." otherwise known as C.A.B.B., was born. There are no dues, and the only rule is that you must be "classic" and proud of it. Look for our table at the '95 Con in L.A., where we will be auctioning off autographed items we have received from most of the major stars of B&B, (who have been incredibly nice and very helpful.) All proceeds from the sale of these items will be going to the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, with whom we are registered. So if you're at the convention, stop by our table and join our group or check out the flier included in this mailing and register with us.

  • lyrics to "Show Me" from "My Fair Lady" with the introduction: "There are all sorts of soft, romantic songs from practically every decade of the past one hundred years (and probably even further back) that have words that make you think of "Beauty And The Beast" and Catherine and Vincent. Anyone who has ever made a music video or listened to one can attest to that fact. However, every once in a while, a song comes along — not soft, not romantic — and yet, it still conjures up memories of certain scenes and/or lines that would fit the words to the song perfectly. For example this song from the delightful "My Fair Lady." Can't you just imagine poor, frustrated Catherine threatening to throw her beloved Vincent off her balcony if he tries to read one more book of poetry to her? The words to this song say it all." (53)
