Second love, also known as second chance at love or learning to love again, is a romantic trope popular in both fanon and in canon. It involves a character finding love with another after losing their previous partner or having their last relationship end in heartbreak. This experience may have left them jaded or wary, perhaps to the extent they swore off love entirely or resigned themselves to singlehood, and thus their newfound romance may be an example of serendpity and healing through the power of love.
If the second love occurs soon after the heartbreak, it may also be an example of a rebound romance.
Examples in canon
- Fire Emblem has several examples:
- In Genealogy of the Holy War, Lewyn tells Erinys he used to be in love with her sister Annand, but now loves her. Anyone Lachesis marries will be this, as her first love was her brother Eldigan.
- Any one of Ingrid Brandl Galatea's romantic partners in Three Houses is this, due to her first love and betrothed Glenn Fraldarius dying pre-canon. Similarly, anyone Seteth ends up with counts as this as he's a widower when the game starts.
- Louise Goldufski is this for Dan Conner on The Conners, as his wife Roseanne died of a drug overdose. Ben Olinsky is this for Darlene, whose marriage to David Healy ended in divorce.
- Katy Hart on Girl Meets World is this for Shawn Hunter, whose romance with Angela from the parent series Boy Meets World didn't work out.
- In the post-series comics of Avatar: The Last Airbender, widower Hakoda falls in love with a woman named Malina.
- Umino is this for Naru on Sailor Moon, after the latter's love for Nephrite ended in tragedy.
- Yumi Omura in Chobits is this for bakery owner Hiroyasu Ueda, whose persocom wife "died" protecting him from an oncoming car. This is also a major source of angst for Yumi, who broke up with him after finding out about the marriage and thinking she'd never be a worthy replacement; Ueda eventually reassures her he loves her for who she is and they get back together.
Examples in fanon
- In the heyday of Avatar: The Last Airbender, it was common to pair Hakoda with Ursa as the former was widowed and the latter had been banished by her husband.
- Klavier Gavin or Athena Cykes are often this for Apollo Justice in Ace Attorney fandom, with his first love being his deceased friend Clay Terran.
- This is also common in Fire Emblem fandom:
- One Genealogy fic had Sigurd marry Tailtiu after accepting that he'd never be reunited with his wife Deirdre.
- This tends to be an explanation for fans who subscribe to the fanon that Lachesis's children Diarmud and Nanna had different fathers. This either uses Beowolf's perceived abandonment of Lachesis or has him die, and either way Lachesis ends up with Finn, who fathers Nanna.
- Some Voltron: Legendary Defender fans pick Romelle or Kolivan as Krolia's second love, as her lover died when Keith was a young child.
