Scotty's Guide to Space Bars -- and drinks! is a recipe book of drinks.

While the majority of recipes are nods to Star Trek, there are a handful that riff on other fandoms, such as Battlestar Galactica (1978), Star Wars, Blake's 7, Space: 1999, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Harry Turtledove's series, Crosstime Traffic.

From an ad in Universal Translator #13: "A slim volume of drinks from around the universe and TV. Some old, some new, all most definitely drinkable. The original Photon Torpedo is included."

Issue 1

Scotty's Guide to Space Bars - and drinks! 1 is not dated (probably 1981) and contains 18 pages.

From an idea by Stephen Billings - extended by Mike Wild.

During his travels aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, Scotty had the opportunity to visit many planets. He wasted no time in seeking out the best space bar in the area, and in sampling the drinks provided.

He has now decided that a collection of his favourite bars...and drinks should be made available to his many friends. However as many of these drinks are extremely potent to Terrans - you are advised to use caution and to sample wisely.

Some of the bars mentioned:

  • The Mothership ("A little difficult to get to but well worth it. The sort, of bar you dream about. The staff don't say much but incredibly friendly - excellent disco lightshow but marred poor music, the piano only plays five notes.") (Close Encounters of the Third Kind)
  • The Space Trooper ("A little hostile but the drinks are good and strong. Excellent Saturday night floor show provided by the Amazing Darth and his dancing Stormtroopers.") (Star Wars)
  • Harry's Bar ("Every space worker in the galaxy goes here, from miners to droids. Renowned in verse and song. Serves up a superb photon torpedo. Resident bearded guitarist.") (Crosstime Saloon)
  • Blake's ("A bar on it's own, you can't miss it. Some of the clientele are a bit distant and you're sometimes bothered by hoodlums from the Andromeda Galaxy but otherwise peaceful. The Supreme Commander said of it, "The entire Federation rushed to get there.")
  • The Tribble Tavern ("A friendly Starfleet bar but prone to visits from insulting Klingons, Frequented by a cute furry creature and the bar seems to get crowded very quickly though no-one seems to come through the doors.") (Star Trek)
  • The Time Portal ("The perfect nite-spot for those who like the 'good old days.' A selection of drinks from every period in the universe. It's a bit cloudy but the land-lord does a great line in anecdotes. Make sure you go through the right door, or else.") (Star Trek)

  • United Services

from issue #2

Welcome to Book Two of "Scotty's Guide". Like its predecessor, it contains many different and unusual drinks from around the galaxy. All have been tried and tested on Terrans, and though very interesting to the palate and quite harm less, they should not be taken in large quantities. Most are quite potent and over indulgence will result in the grandfather of all hangovers.

I can personally recommend the BLUE MOON and the REACTOR, but of course, you will all find your own favourites.

If anyone would like to contribute to Book Three, we would like to hear of any unusual, interesting drinks you may have sampled on your travels round the many galaxies. They must be drinkable and safe - we don't want a Romulan Revenge, which can, as you know, be fatal to Terrans.

NOTE: While all of the drink names are included below, only a few more interesting descriptions are included.

  • Harry's Pick-Me-Up ("Sometimes served in Harry's Bar, Lunerville [sic], Harry's Pick-Me-Up is a favorite among the many different life forms that congregate there.")
  • Apollo ("The bar of the recreation room on the 'Galactica' was the perfect place to refine and test this feltercarp.")
  • Whizz Bang ("Scorpio's Base was well equipped, and Villa [sic] made the most of it!")
  • Vaal's Revenge
  • Hoth Glacier
  • United Space Services
  • Asylum
  • Blue Moon
  • United Federation ("Invented on a jaunt to Babel. Even Sarek tried it, with the comment, 'Fascinating.'")
  • Silver Surfer
  • Bela Oxmyx Special ("Just the drink to serve when the 'Fed' comes looking for its 'cut,'")
  • Fascinator
  • Blue Lagoon
  • A Taste of Armageddon ("A drink favored on Eminiar. Three of these and you don't have to worry about the war!")
  • Tantalus Cocktail ("A drink made for Christmas time, prepared by Helen Noel -- who else?")
