Sam & Dean is the familial and platonic gen relationship between Sam and Dean Winchester.

Canon

Dean and Sam are brothers that hunters of the supernatural. They are constantly trying to save each other from various calamities and forces beyond their control.

Fandom

Perhaps because of a lack of viable ships aside from incest and RPF, Supernatural had a large gen community from the beginning. However, a lot of fans were draw to the series because of the relationship between the brothers.

Common Tropes in Fanworks

• Pre-series or Weechester: stories that take place before the beginning of the series, if these fanworks take place when Sam and Dean are children they are referred to as Weechesters.
• Hunting or Casefic: similar to canon these fanworks focus on the monster hunts the Winchesters go on, these can be seen as a type of casefic because they often have to solve a mystery to discern which type of monster is involved. Fans can expand upon canon monsters, bring in monsters from other universes, or create their own
• Secondary Relationship: in fic where Sam or Dean are in a romantic relationship with other characters the Sam & Dean relationship will often be a secondary focus of the narrative
