SHINee on the OTW is a monthly event created and run by SHINee AO3, an archival project focusing on SHINee RPF. The event focuses on the history of SHINee in fanlore, runs fest highlights and interviews fest moderators, and runs 'OTW Challenges' to encourage Shawols to add to the history and create more in the process. The event is run on both Archive of Our Own, Blogger and Twitter, with some challenges including the Fanlore Wikia.

Background

On December 26, 2022, SHINee AO3 tweeted that they would be debuting a monthly event - for one week in the month, the project would look at SHINee fanlore history via “fest & event highlights, challenges for you guys to archive - and make! - history and more”. They said the first event would start on December 29, 2022 (in KST)[1], however this was pushed back a day due to moderators being ill[2].

The monthly event began officially on December 30, 2022.

The project runs this on Twitter with Archive of Our Own collections serving as an archive for the writing and tagging challenges.

SHINee on the OTW Interview Series

First Event - SHINee Rebanded and the Alternate Universe - No Band Tag

The first SHINee on the OTW event debuted on December 30, 2022 (KST). The event runs from December 30, 2020 - January 06, 2023. The event was originally run on Twitter and AO3 but was also moved to Blogger - the event post for the first event can be found here.

Event Background

The first event for SHINee on the OTW was themed around the SHINee Rebanded fest and the Alternate Universe - No Band Archive of Our Own tag due to the fest’s theme[3]. They did this via a number of events:

  • An interview with the original fest creator
  • 2 OTW Challenges
  • A look at the history of No Band theme usage in SHINee fanlore
  • Looking at No Band as a theme in fanlore as a whole and what invented and popularised the theme

The project ran two events for their first event, of which they dubbed the OTWrangle and OTWriting challenges, respectively.

The OTW Challenge collection can be found here.

OTWrangle Challenge

For the OTWrangle challenge, they asked creators to add the Alternate Universe - No Band tag to their already existing works for a number of reasons:

  1. With our fest focus this week, the SHINee Rebanded fest had the active goal of increasing the No Band tags on the site. This is part of our event as a way to give the creator a small surprise that their fest - whether remaining cancelled or ongoing (to be found out in our interview on Jan 4!) - still had an impact on the fandom. Fic fest creators work tirelessly to increase fandom content and this is partly our way of giving back to the creator’s hard work no matter where that hard work ended
  2. “Alternate Universe - XX” does not necessarily filter under No Band. A Royal AU is - most commonly - focused on SHINee as a non k-pop group, however, some writers will use a Royal AU to look at SHINee as a K-Pop group. It makes things a bit more filtered and organised for readers and other authors to enhance and further describe their works using the tags.
  3. Increasing the amount of tags tells readers if that Vampire AU is focusing on SHINee as a k-pop idol group as vampires or in a totally different universe! It allows for potentially more readers to your fic!
  4. It actively helps the Archive, other OTW projects and our OTWols! AO3 uses tags to organise and filter. For instance, if you have the tag “No SHINee” but not No Band, adding “No Band” can allow the AO3 to update the tags, meaning anything with “No SHINee” will auto filter under the No Band tag.
  5. It helps our OTWols to add more info to the SHINee Fanlore page. [...] it allows us to track and update SHINee history on the Fanlore to the most (and least) popular trends over time.
  6. We will be sharing all fics that add the tag giving you a little bit of promotion for your fics!
  7. Some fic fest have said using the data driven by the OTWrangle Challenges will allow them to create more fandom-driven events. For instance, Taemythos - the Taemin-centric mythology focused fic fest - have said if they had more coherent data on what is more popular they can make events for that and events to challenge the least popular statistics - using an example if vampire!SHINee as a kpop group is more popular, they can create events focused on vampire!SHINee as a non k-pop group and such!

The following fan works added the Alternate Universe - No Band tag due to the event:

OTWriting Challenge

For the OTWriting Challenge, the project asked authors to see if they could write an Alternate Universe - No Band fic in 2,000 words or less, although, they allow slightly over due to some authors struggling with the 2k word cap.

The works written for this event were:

SHINee Rebanded Moderator Interview

On January 3rd the journalism moderator for SHINee AO3 - Mod Flame - hosted an interview with the SHINee Rebanded moderator to give more information into the fest's background. Posting was delayed due to the project working with the SuperM writing challenges due to antifan behaviour leaving the fests at risk and looking for a place to post the interview[4].

The interview was published on the 6th on the project's Blogger page and can be read here.

First Event Summary

The look at the No Band history never happened and no clarification was given as to why although the project was quiet for a few days only logging on to inform that they were working with the SuperM fests. Due to anti-fan behaviour, the fests were apparently reported, leaving fests with getting warnings on their accounts[5] - SHINee AO3 worked with the projects as 'at risk projects' until the SuperM equivalent of the project could help them out[6]. They were initially stated to be posted later on January 1st[7] but no further information was given as to the status of the two projects.

On the 7th - 8th in KST - the project announced it would be wrapping up the first OTW event - they did state that authors would have longer to upload their OTWriting Challenge works to Archive of Our Own, however[8].
