Resurrection, Reconstruction, and Redemption is a Steve/Tony story by Elspethdixon & Seanchai. It was the first novel-length story for the pairing. It's part of the Resurrection 'Verse, and has three finished sequels, Readjustment and Hostage to Fortune, as well as a third sequel Reassembled, which all continue with the aftermath of the Civil War and SHRA (Super Human Registration Act) in the 616 verse (the main continuity in Marvel comics).
Summary LJ: Doom brings Steve back from the dead. Hijinks ensue, some of which might vaugely be considered plot. Surprisingly, this isn't actually crack-fic—it's just Marvel.
Summary Tales of Suspense: Doom brings Cap back from the dead, whereupon he has to deal with Doombots, Red Skull, the Mandarin, Registration, a bunch of bickering superheroes, and Tony's apparent nervous breakdown.
From the ship_manifesto:
Yes, I know; it violates fannish ettiquette something fierce to link your own fic, but I can't very well leave it off the list. RR&R is a Civil War fixit fic, and is/was the first really major Steve/Tony fic out there, responsible for converting a number people to the fandom, and at 200 pages and 90,000 words, is the closest thing to an epic the fandom's got.[1]
Recs and Reviews
The fic that pretty much launched the pairing. Set shortly after Steve's death and ignoring Secret Invasion; Steve gets brought back and he and Tony sort things out while dealing with attacks on all sides. There are several more completed stories in the series, and one WIP, Reassembled. Really good in-depth look at some of the various issues of Civil War, and how they might have played out.[2]
Though the series has a lot of action, the best thing about it is how it deals with the relationship between the characters, be they romantic or not. Great characterization, fantastic writing and a good plot make for a very enjoyable read.[3]
This is the fix-it fic to end all others. seanchai and elspethdixon put the Marvel universe back together after Civil War has all but torn it to shreds. They don't make it easy; this is a believable, beautifully plotted fic, and that means that everything doesn't immediately come up roses. While the story is definitely more focused toward Tony and Steve's relationship, the rest of the Avengers aren't forgotten, which ties into exactly what it is that I love about this fic: it's so carefully plotted and executed so well, it feels like it could (perhaps should) be canon.[5]
Okay, this is, according to Avengers fandom, the novel that launched the fandom. It's effing epic and plotty and schoompy and hits all my angst and woobie buttons in one go. There's still another two novels after this set in the same verse and more, according to the author coming right up. Not to worry though, the end of each novel leaves room for a sequel but it's not cliffhangerish enough to make you tear your hair out. And the best part? You do not have to read the comics to understand this. Just a little bit of background knowledge will suffice, hell just reading the ship_manifesto will suffice. One warning though, this fic will eat your life. I'm currently working my way through the verse and it's FUCK YEAH all the way![6]
The Civil War gave Steve/Tony a big boost whilst also killing the paring but fandom always has its fixes. The first part of the series, Resurrection, Reconstruction, and Redemption is right up there on my list of fics so good I wish they were canon. You know you wanna have your heart stolen by her Steve.[7]
Illustrations
Akatsuki Ayako created thirteen illustrations for this novel, one for each chapter.[8] There are three versions of each image which gives insight into the creation of the art. The images are accompanied by the text passages they are illustrating.
Chapter Ten:
Fifteen minutes later, he was lying utterly motionless on top of the bed'ss garish floral coverlet, one arm thrown over his eyes. There were still traces of blood under his fingernails.
Steve thrust the last spare shirt into his knapsack—Tony's shirt, but at this point their clothes were so thoroughly mixed up that it wasn't worth the effort to separate them out—and sat down on the bed next to him.Chapter Twelve:
He took a deep breath, readying himself to resume the chase, and then the headset he'd forgotten he was wearing crackled to life, and the sound of screaming echoed in his ears.
Steve had known Tony's voice before he'd ever seen his face; it was the first thing he'd heard when he'd woken up from the ice. He would know it anywhere, even through the crackle of the Extremis, distorted by pain.
It took a hell of a lot to make Tony scream like that.
The sound cut off as abruptly as it had begun, the line going dead again.
