Qui-Gon Jinn is a character from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. He is a Jedi warrior diplomat and the Master of Obi-Wan Kenobi. He is played by Liam Neeson.
Canon
In the movie he made the decision to teach Anakin Skywalker against the wishes of the Jedi Council but couldn't follow through because he was killed at the end of the movie.
Fandom
Most of the fanfiction focuses on the relationship between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, be it student and teacher, friends (sometimes enemies), warriors or lovers.
According to the Jedi Apprentice books, Obi-Wan became his Padawan when he was thirteen and Qui-Gon was reluctant to take him on because he'd already lost an apprentice - Xanatos - to the Dark Side. In fact, he first refused Obi-Wan as his Padawan, even when they spontaneously formed a teaching bond while fighting off pirates together, and only became his Master when Obi-Wan showed again that he was willing to sacrifice his life to save others. In stories this often leads to tensions and insecurities in their relationship that need to be overcome. Also, Xanatos features prominently as an opponent.
The fandom collectively denied Qui-Gon's canonical death at the end of Episode I so in most stories it just didn't happen.
