Peter Hale/Lydia Martin, also known as Pydia, is the non-canonical het pairing of Lydia Martin and Peter Hale in Teen Wolf fandom.

Canon

Peter was Lydia's introduction to all things supernatural. This first happened when Peter was the alpha. He terrorized Scott McCall, Stiles Stilinski, and most of their friends/social group. During a school dance, Lydia went out onto the lacrosse field and was attacked by Peter, who bit her, causing her to fall into a coma for a period of time, but ultimately didn't turn her. After that, while all sorts of supernatural events were happening around Lydia without her knowledge, Peter used magic to appear to Lydia as his younger self when he was dead. This was to use Lydia to get all of the ingredients for a resurrection spell. Peter was successful and came back to life and continued to hang around the Pack off and on throughout the seasons.

Fandom

It was during the magical hallucinations, in season 2, that this ship really set sail. Peter's play during the hallucinations was to flirt with Lydia and make her interested, which happened according to plan. However, many people realized that their personalities and chemistry aligned really well and began to ship the two. As the show went on, Lydia and Peter coexisted more and more, and there was more instances of them challenging one another, verbally sparring, and overall complementing one another. However, the most common shipping of the two comes with the caveat that the possession/hallucination dreams didn't happen. As thisdiscontentedwinter on Tumblr explains,

I love the idea of it… but only if Lydia could have first got Peter in a place where she was in the position of power. Because after he haunted her (possessed her? Whatever he did there) they didn’t actually seem to interact much and she never seemed to have got the chance to get the upper hand with him.

If they’d shown Lydia being sassy right on back at him, and threatening his life once or twice–with no doubt that she could actually do it–then yes, I would have loved that! As it is, I stick to Pydia in fics that are either AU and the possession never happened, or where Lydia basically carries Peter’s balls around in her purse. And he loves it, of course.

I like it best when they make a formidable couple, and nobody can quite figure out what the hell they see in each other!

Common Tropes in Fanworks

  • Alpha/Beta/Omega: common in Teen Wolf fandom, usually Peter is a dominant Alpha
  • Dub-con: works can be tagged for a variety of reasons, from the use of magic, the melding of minds or mating and A/B/O dynamics
  • All Human AU: Peter is not a werewolf and Lydia is not a Banshee, usually their first meeting is in a more mundane setting and they begin a relationship
  • Age Difference: because of the large age gap between the two characters, and Lydia's age at the beginning of the series, occasionally Lydia will be aged up in fanworks, usually to at least the age of a legal adult. However, many writers will keep their canonical ages and use the issues that may arise as a feature of their fanfiction
  • Side Pairing: sometimes a featured secondary pairing, commonly in stories focusing on the pairing of Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski
