[the editorial]:

As I write this, tomorrow is May 1st and we're really pushing the envelope on getting KCC #5 done for the con. I hate doing this. I like doing things on schedule, with deadlines and so forth. But life doesn't work on schedules. And neither does writing fiction. KCC #5 may very likely be 300 pages, which is about 100 pages over and above my personal guesstimation when I started the damn thing!

So, maybe I'm a little bummed that I won't be able to put in al the maps and stuff I wanted to put in this issue. But I'm also more than a little heartened by looking at the file for the Fire Zone Companion -- the things half full and most of it's on disk. It's taken me this long to realize that I haven't realy been working on one zine, but two! Ain't fanzines grand?

We lost a few old friends this season -- MacGyver's last episode was better than most of the episodes earlier this season and it made sense! -- but mid-season replacements have been thick and fast. I'm looking forward to more episodes of Young Indiana Jones (which is due to return this fall, with the possibility of unaired episodes showing this summer). With luck, maybe we'l see the rest of the episodes filmed of Nightmare Cafe.

Of my two favorite new programs this season, I'll Fly Away has yet to be renewed, but the Commish will be back (I recommend both without reservation!).

And, all and all, it's been a sluggish season for Mystery, with the exception of the magnificent Prime Suspect, but a boffo season for Masterpiece Theatre. I suspect that Young Indiana Jones, Mann & Machine, and Nightmare Cafe will have some fannish following, but none seems to be the breakaway favorite, like Quantum Leap became two seasons ago. So, is fandom waiting for Deep Space Nine, the next Star Wars movie, Coppola's Dracula, or some unknown upstart syndicated series to fire fannish imaginations once more?

Our mailbag question this month is "Why don't you do a zine about (fill-in-the-blank)?"

Why does anyone do a zine about anything? Some people do zines because a fandom is hot, or because they know they can put together a lot of submissions quickly. We do zines because we want to do them-that's it and that's all. In the case of Ahead of His Time and many of our one-shot wonders, we look at a series and say, "Hey, that was a great show , but no one's really done a zine for it. Why don't we?

Sometimes, as with KCC, we'll say, "I'd really like to write different genres of stories in different fandoms. Why don't we try something different... ?" And every now and again, something like the Quantum Leapflet will come up, where we'll have one story and an idea to do a small, inexpensive, quality zine.

We love your suggestions and want to encourage them -- after all, we know we're not the only people who have ideas and we're always happy to find new ones. If you ask us about a specific fandom, we'll tell you why we might or might not be interested. Our answer could range from personal taste (come 'on, admit it — there are shows you can't stand and wouldn't do a zine on if somebody offered you a gazillion dollars), to feasibility (somebody's already done one, better than we could ever hope to or we've done it before), to scheduling (we've just got too many irons in the fire, so maybe in a couple if years ....), to an attempt to maintain sanity (which is why we'll never do an adzine, letterzine, or regular multimedia zine). But the point is, we'll answer.

And who knows... that zine you'd like to readjust might become one of ours!
