Natsume Yuujinchou is a manga series by Yuki Midorikawa. It was also adapted as an anime.

The main character is Natsume Takashi, a lonely orphaned teenage boy who can see spirits (ayakashi/youkai) and inherited from his grandmother a book she used to capture the names of spirits and control them. Over the course of the series he gains a loving foster family, a spirit bodyguard, and human and spirit friends.

Fandom

The fandom has many gen stories and loves the found family trope. Over half of the works included on Archive of Our Own are rated for general audiences[1] and almost the same number are placed in the gen category.

Despite its relative popularity in Japan [2], the Western fandom is fairly small in comparison to other animanga fandoms. However, despite its smaller size, the fanbase is very dedicated, and many fans turn to both the anime and manga as a source of comfort for its themes of kindness, healing, and friendship.

Popular pairings include Natsume/Tanuma and Matoba/Natori.
