In fic, fans often explore Tanuma's desire to get closer to Natsume, as well as Natsume's unfamiliarity with genuine, healthy relationships. They are often depicted as best friends who understand each other on a very deep and personal level. Writers also may depict their ability to understand each other without speaking, as they frequently communicate non-verbally in canon around their friends (most of whom are not sensitive to youkai).
