  • Grief/Angst - Some fanworks focus on Sarabi's grief at Mufasa's death, and her dealing with it.
    • Trouble Conceiving - A relatively common headcanon is that the pair had some trouble with having cubs before Simba. This can include miscarriages & stillbirths, newborn child death, or simply difficulty in Sarabi getting pregnant in the first place.
  • Fluff - In contrast, their relationship prior to his death is usually portrayed as healthy and loving, and often fairly fluffy.
  • Betrothal Swap - Sometimes fans will headcanon Mufasa originally being betrothed to Sarafina, and Taka betrothed to Sarabi, until it becomes clear that the actual relationships that develop are switched.
