Marcel Gerard is a regular character on The Originals.
Canon
He first appeared in the backdoor pilot (episode 4x20 of The Vampire Diaries) as the reigning king of New Orleans.
He was born as a slave. He met Klaus Mikaelson (and later the rest of the Mikaelson siblings), who took him under his wing and later turned him into a vampire. He remained in New Orleans after Mikael chased the Klaus, Rebekah and Elijah out of the city. The Mikaelson siblings thought him dead and never returned to look for him. He then created a niche for himself and took over as the supernatural ruler of the city.
Fandom
Marcel started to show up in Klaus-centric fanfics almost immediately after his character was announced. Before Charles Michael Davis has been cast, and before any actual details were known, fans tended to portray Marcel as a French (assumed white) vampire and a friend of Klaus'. Back then, his dialogue had French endearments peppered in.
Common Pairings
The most popular Marcel pairings are het pairings with Rebekah and Camille. While a lot more fans prefer his relationship with Davina to be platonic and familial there are some who ship those two romantically.
In the slash department, Marcel is shipped with Klaus, Elijah and Thierry, though none of those pairings are very popular.
