What about Wintershock as a pairing appeals to you?
My love for this pairing really stems from the characters themselves. I’ve always been drawn to strong, intelligent female characters- back when I was writing HP/MCU stuff, I really gravitated towards Hermione Granger; I always loved how she wasn’t afraid to toe the line or break the law when it was needed (I mean, she kept a reporter in a jar once, come on). When I stumbled across the Darcyland fandom (and I mean that very literally- to me it seemed to have just popped up into existence on my radar), I found another character who I could really empathise and connect with, though it still took a while before I started writing her.
Bucky Barnes is a character that I am just entranced by- there’s something about the inherent tragedy of his story that really just pulled me in post CA:TWS, and once I sunk my teeth in I just found that I couldn’t let him go. Once I really got into the Darcyland fandom and decided to start writing Darcy-centric fics (prior to writing, I was very much a person who just flitted happily between pairings) that the Wintershock pairing really took off for me.
For whatever reason, I find that these two characters just really work together; Darcy is the tech-savvy intern, so entrenched in the 21st Century that I almost can’t imagine her anywhere else, and Bucky is a man trying desperately to make sense of a new world and come to terms with everything that’s been inflicted on him (and that he’s inflicted on others). They just… work.
Obviously, because it’s in essence a ‘crack pairing’, we’ve never seen their on-screen dynamics, but I’ve found over the years that that hardly matters when you have such fabulous writers to flesh them out and make their interactions so believable.
What kind of Wintershock story would you love to read that hasn’t been written yet by you or others?
Okay so I’ve got two fics that I would love to see written by someone who is Not Me. One is an Anastasia AU, where Darcy is the lost Stark heiress (I just really love the Darcy is Tony’s family trope, okay… though here it would probs make more sense if she was his sister) and Bucky is the Gardener’s son-come-conman who helped Darcy escape Stane’s hostile takeover of Stark Industries when she was a child. Years later they meet again, though neither recognise the other but Bucky convinces her to come with him and Natasha to try and ‘convince’ Tony Stark that she’s his sister/daughter. Like, can someone please write this.
Alternately, I’d love a fic where Darcy is a criminal, and Bucky is a cop/detective/agent tasked with bringing her in.
I really like AU’s okay.
