Logically Star Trek was a gen Star Trek: TOS anthology of fiction, puzzles, art and articles.
It is believed to have been the first Star Trek fanzine published in the state of Alaska, and ran four issues in 1975 and 1976, although ten "lead" stories had been written for publication.
Some Writers Branched Out and Created Another Zine
Some of the writers for this zine left to start their own zine. See Memory Alpha.
Issue 1
Logically Star Trek 1 is a 12-page Star Trek: TOS zine. It was published in Winter 1975.
From the editor:
We haven't gotten off to a very good start as far as sales were concerned.Through Dec. 18 we had 10 paid orders. But I guess it's to be expected.
We need more artwork, though. I managed to find some photos and trace some pictures for the artwork here, but we can't use the same pictures issue after issue after issue, now can we? Send in that artwork!
Anyway, thanks a heap for buying this first issue. We really do appreciate it, since there's no point in putting out a fanzine if nobody wants it, right?
- A Word of Greeting, by Dean Gerrold (aka Jerry Modene) (2)
- Genesis, article by Allan Evans (3)
- The ST Alphabet (3)
- Bio-Logically Star Trek, a Vulcan Physiology, part one, by David Back (3)
- The Federation Chronicles, fiction by Kelly McClure (4)
- The Youngest Trekkie, by Kathy Connelly (a short description of a 2-year old watching Star Trek: TAS) (4)
- Rescue, fiction by Dean Gerrold (5)
- Word Search puzzle (includes a challenge!) (9)
- Time Out by Jerry Modene and Terry Roguski (Despite the fact this was the title of the editorial going forward, this appears to have been the first part of a story. However, despite there being no gaps in the pagination, it is missing. It is, however, mentioned by the editor as being planned for the next issue: We will have "Time Out," which is chapter two in my continuing saga of the good ship Enterprise and her crew.")
- "Attention All Trekkies Bulletin" and one of the many false rumors: "Gene Roddenberry announced on Feb.2,1975, one day before press run, that Star Trek is returning to N.B.C.! It will be in the form of 90 minute special to be aired in the spring of '76. There will be 90 minute to two hour specials during the regular season. Roddenberry also announced that the entire original cast will be a part of the show.") (In the next issue, the editor prints a retraction of this; Helen Young of the Star Trek Welcommittee alerted him that this was all false.) (11)

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 1
You have a nicely varied content, some well-written fiction, and it's quite handsome as well-the paper, reproduction and photos are all first-rate. I'm sure you and your staff are very proud of your first zine. [1]
Issue 2
Logically Star Trek 2 was published in Spring 1975 and contains 12 pages.
It has illos by Jerry Modene.
In this issue, Jerry Modene dumps his pseud: "Dean Gerrold." It appears that David Gerrold told him to change it.
Well greetings from Jerry Modene, ye editor of Logically STAR TREK. Jerry Modene?!? What happened to Dean Gerrold? Well, I'll tell you. I am Dean Gerrold - or at least I was. Having received rave reviews for "Rescue" in particular and the fanzine in general, I'm ready to cast off the pen name. Besides, David Gerrold thought it would be a pretty good idea, to avoid confusion. It's nice to know, though, that the DAGE Co. Trolls think your stuff is pretty good.
Thanks, people.
Anyway, we had a bit of trouble getting this issue out, mainly because we've got twenty-five dollars left in our treasury. But we didn't have near as much trouble on the technical standpoint. We got a bunch of stories (from me and Kelly and David [Back] mostly) and lots of pictures and even a couple of drawings and a cartoon to grace the pages.
Includes comments from the editor:
"Carole Brownell, president of STSTC, wrote "I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Roddenberry's speech at Rice University at Houston, Texas on Jan. 22, 1975. At that time, he said: 'When we begin shooting the STAR TREK motion picture, it will be shot with the original cast.' At a brief meeting with Mr. Roddenberry after his speech, I was told, 'We will also use as many of the original production people as possible.' Late flash! according to a new letter from Helen Young, Roddenberry has been told by" Paramount to go for a 'drawing' motion picture - i.e., not just for Trekkies, for everybody. In other words (forgive me, Helen), I think they're saying Shoot for the Oscars! Oh, boy. I can just see it! Best Actor: William Shatner. Best Picture: STAR TREK. Best Special Effects: STAR TREK. Best Producer: Gene Roddenberry. Best Supporting Actor: Leonard Nimoy. Best Actress : Nichelle Nichols. Best Supporting Actress: Majel Barrett. There are more, but you get the idea.
- Time Out!, editorial by Jerry Modene (by now publishing under his own name) (2)
- Star Heck by Mike Hureaux and Jerry Modene ("Our Star Trek parody, which I think, will definitely rival Lieutenant Mary Sue, or any of the others. I can see it now, "Captain Quirk and Mr. Spunk meet Lt. Mary Sue." What a dream story that would be. A real nightmare.") (3)
- Federation Chronicles, part 2, fiction by Kelly McClure, with "some help by Jerry Modene (4)
- Bio-Logically Star Trek, a Vulcan Physiology, conclusion, article by David Back (6)
- Time Out, chapter two, by Jerry Modene and "ex-member Terry Roguski (she quit)" [2] (7)
- The Star Trek Address by Jerry Modene (article, "If Lincoln were alive and a Trekkie") (10)
- comments about more Star Trek on the screen, the results of Save the Star Trek Cast fan campaign (11)
- Trivia by Dean Gerrold [3] (with some help by Terry Roguski)
Reactions and Reviews: Issue 2
I enjoyed your zine, Logically STAR TREK, very professionally done.
I am looking forward to the second installment of "The Federation Chronicles."
"Rescue" was a nice, straight, adventure story, although Spock's dialogue seems a little stilted in the beginning; but it smoothed out. [4]
So far I haven't found anyone else in Alaska who is really crazy about STAR TREK, but then I don't have that big a group of people I'm close to. My family and friends tolerate my interest as long as I don't mention it more often than once a month or so. If the show would only be rerun up here, that would help a lot. ((Since this letter was written, STAR TREK has returned to Alaska. By the Midnight Sun Network. Shows their good taste. Getting STAR TREK and hiring me within two weeks!))
I saw [the episodes] "Charlie X" and "The Naked Time" in Philadelphia in June [5], otherwise no STAR TREK since '68. If you have ever heard of a science-fiction club in Anchorage, I would appreciate being in touch. Good luck with your fanzine venture. [6]
I sent my copy of Logically Number one with Diane Marchant of Australia on her way to LA and then home, to give to Gene R. HE DID LIKE "Genesis." We thought he would. He's the type of guy who'll take time to read it. I don't think you can say that about everyone.
I've heard too many rumors about Shatner and Nimoy not/will/won't doing a ST movie. I don't pay attention anymore. I HOPE that's all it is: rumor. STAR TREK won't be ST without them. Call it anything else but not ST or it'll fizzle. Maybe Diane Marchant will know (for sure) when the big three (Kelley included) will make up their minds. She has been writing to Majel Barrett Roddenberry for years.
I'm spreading the word a little about LST -- maybe (I hope) you'll get some more subscriptions. I rave about "Genesis." "Where--where?!?" they say...
You draw better 'n' I do. I have to trace. I put the Enterprise on the back of a nylon jacket and then I get the actors to sign the jacket. Afterwards, the names are gone over in liquid ball point embroidery.
I have a rug -- the hooked kind -- five feet long, two and a half feet wide of the Enterprise in space in orbit around a planet and a sun's (not shown) reflection on the ship. I hope to take it to Equicon '76 and show it off.
A partner and I are in the preparation stages of an adult Trekzine, "The Sensuous Vulcan"... In a story I've written -- which will published in "Sensuous Vulcan", one of my characters is a "Vegan." [7] Now -- I'd never heard or seen this in any zines. My Vegan is not overly defined physically ((Editor: Oh no, in an adult Trekzine?)) , just that his eyes are ORANGE. [8]
The wait for this issue was not excessive -- indeed I've been waiting on one fanzine for a year-and-a-half now.
I wanted to comment on your story, "Rescue." It was a nice idea, rather unusual, but I have a couple of criticisms to make. They may or may ont be valid, as I am merely a seventeen year old who writes to suit herself ((Editor: So am I.))
[very detailed comments about "Rescue" snipped]
At the end of LST 2, you sounded rather desperate for material which I took as a good sign. I only submit things to desperate people because they are more likely to accept my pitiful ramblings -- but so far I haven't found anyone quite desperate enough. (If you don't count Kelly Wickham -- The Vulcanian Chronicles -- who couldn't get out of printing two short sayings.) This particularity bad piece, "The Enterprise and I," has been rejected twice already [9].
[...]
So finally ends this miserable letter. Thanks again for LST. It is a very nicely done zine, one you can be proud of. Love Long and Perspire! [10]
