As in many other fandoms, sexual or romantic pairings may be denoted by the characters' names separated by a slash, e.g. "Clark/Lex" refers to the pairing of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. Smallville fandom also has a tendency towards portmanteaus, or pairing smush names, where the characters' names are combined to produce a new word, such as smooshing Clark + Lex into Clex. The frequency of this practice may be because initials are an impractical way to shorten pairing designations, as many characters share initials (for example, C/L may be Clark/Lex, Clark/Lana, Clark/Lois, Chloe/Lex, Chloe/Lana, etc...).
