- Enemyslash: Superman and Lex are antagonists in most universes, any romantic or sexual relationship usually follows the traditions of enemyslash, or the enemies to lovers trope
- Dark Themes: because of the nature of their relationship it is not unusual to find many darker themes or elements explored, like violence, non-con and dub-con
- Alpha/Beta/Omega: although somewhat rare, fics set in the omegaverse usually have an Omega Clark and Alpha Lex
- Redemption: some sort of redemption arc for Lex, where he is no longer a villain, and thus able to begin a relationship with Clark/Superman
