Xiyao (曦瑶) is the slash pairing of Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao from the Mo Dao Zu Shi fandom and fandoms for its subsequent adaptations, including The Untamed.

A romantic relationship is fanon in the original cnovel and its adaptations: a manhua, donghua, audio drama and a live-action adaptation, The Untamed. Author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu is adamant that she did not intend to write a romantic relationship, but declared that fans can think however they like.[1]

Zhu Zanjin, the actor who plays Jin Guangyao in The Untamed, explained that just as the canonical couple Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are "very good friends, so Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao are very good friends."[2]

Canon Background

Lan Xichen is the heir to the Gusu Lan Clan, and Meng Yao, later named Jin Guangyao, is the illegitimate child of a prostitute and Jin Guangshan, leader of the Lanling Jin Clan. They meet for the first time when Lan Xichen flees the his home after it is burned by the Qishan Wen Clan. Lan Xichen carries items from their library, and Meng Yao shelters him. They meet again during the Sunshot Campaign, when Meng Yao is a confidant of Nie Mingjue. Nie Mingjue later becomes suspicious of Meng Yao, but Lan Xichen always takes his side. After the war, the three become sworn brothers.

Unbeknownst to Lan Xichen, Meng Yao later kills Nie Mingjue and commits various other horrible crimes that are uncovered by Wei Wuxian after he is resurrected. Lan Xichen trusts Jin Guangyao until the dramatic finale in Guanyin Temple when the truth is revealed. Nie Huaisang then tricks Lan Xichen into killing Jin Guangyao. Lan Xichen goes into seclusion as a result.

Adaptational Differences

Both The Untamed and the donghua alter the Guanyin Temple scene. Instead of Lan Xichen seizing the dying Jin Guangyao as per the novel, audio drama, and manhua, the dying Jin Guangyao seizes Lan Xichen and asks him to stay and die with him. Lan Xichen does not struggle, and thus, Jin Guangyao shoves him to safety.

The audio drama inserts a scene in which Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen briefly draw swords and fight in the Guanyin Temple, during which Jin Guangyao reflects that he never expected their relationship to ever come to such a point.
